Wexford trip June 15th - 21st

#1 Post by finding nemo »

People: Powderkeg, Wrasseking, Krusty and Myself

Duration: 6 days

Tide:all tides

Weather: very windy and not too bad

Bait: mostly lures, crab, sandeel, lug, rag and razor

Report:

The bass ban was over so a trip to Wexford was in order. When we arrived the conditions were against us with 30km winds blowing up a big surf and weed to beat the band. Wrasseking, Powderkeg and Krusty managed a pollack each before we opted for bait fishing in a sheltered cove that produced plenty of dog fish and a decent enough flounder.

The next morning we headed for Bannow estuary to see if we could pluck a bass or two out of the ebb tide. We used running ledger rigs with a size 4 rolling leads and fresh peeler crab. Unfortunately there was no action but we had great craic and enjoyed the beautiful scenary.

That evening we tried our rock mark again which produced one bass on a very old looking megabass x-layer. Wrasseking had a follow in and i missed another bass soon after.

Image

The following night myself and Krusty tried ballyhack in the hope of afew fish and abit of shelter.
We managed a load of flounder, dabs and a lone codling and silver eel.

With the weather still making things difficult we made a quick call to Cian at http://absolutefishingireland.blogspot.com/ who told us that the conditions in the Waterford area were abit better. We headed down stopping by at his shop to have a chat and pick up a lure or two which later proved to be lethal.

Off we went to explore the bass heaven yet unknown to us. The Coppercoast.

This bass was taken on the lure Cian had recommended an hour beforehand. The Megabass X-140 SW HT Hama Shirasu 19.5g. Lure fishing isn't new to us lads but catching bass on them is and this fish gave one of the best scraps to date.

The next evening we headed to a new rock mark back in Wexford to test the lures with the flood tide into darkness. What was about to happen i will remember for the rest of my bass fishing days!!!

4 of the bass were on the megabass until one came off coming up the rock face and took my lucky lure with him. The 5th was on a Tackle House Feed Shallow 128.

As darkness set in the lads got afew to add to the haul.

After a great night we headed home for a sleep and set the alarm clocks for 3;45am to catch first light in the same spot.

Image

The next morning conditions looked bassy so we knew it was going to produce afew more fish before we headed back to Dublin.

I managed a bass on a silver wedge that came off at the rock edge due to the surf pounding in and out.

Later on the surf died down abit giving the lures better action.

My feed shallow was smashed like any other bass on the trip. It stripped line, ducked and dived until we actually seen it was a pollack.

Image

Powderkeg was up next with a lovely bass on a pearl feedshallow which seemed to put up a great scrap on the light gear.

Image

Next up was Wrasseking with 2 successive bass on a green needlefish.

Chillin in the hot tub after.

It's going to be hard to get back into the bait fishing after the last few days but im sure we'll be back down soon enough to muller afew more bass!
The only complaint was not being able to fish alot of marks due to weed but maybe next time!
The house in hookless village we rented off a family friend. It was ideal for the trip down, a great location and very resonable. If anyone is looking to get afew days away give us shout for contact details.

Cheers,
Rob
