New member here. Going to Kilmore quay this summer and intend to do a bit of fishing. Went there last year and caught squat. I tried to catch mullet on the west side with no look (although, I use a limpet as bait). I need to catch something this year or wife will keep slagging me.
I need a new rod and have been looking at the Shakey Salt Travel / Salt bass and MPV. I really needs to be portable as taking kids and mountain of other s*** with us.
Has anyone fished down there before and what methods yields the best results (ie. eatable fish!)
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. Yes a boat trip would almost guarantee some fish. I'm mainly thinking about fishing from the harbour and in and around Burrow beach using baits spinning and probably feathers

If you can head up to the hook or the back of slade harbour you can get good shore fishing. I'd highly recommend taking a trip on one of the charters if you can. I'm sure they would fit you on a part booked boat and you would get some great fishing.
I had a Shakespeare salt bass rod a few years ago. Not bad at all as far as i remember. It can cover a few bases, light enough for lures and feathers, sturdy enough for general beach/pier angling.

I would not fancy eating the mullet in or on the west side of the harbour anyway thats for sure.
Try the end of the main working pier with small baited rigs over hw or the burrow beach west of the harbour with lug/crab baits from low water up.
Ask the skippers around the pier about a short evening trip im sure they will look after you. Or contact leslie Bates on the link above. They usually fish evening trips from 5-9 or so.

Re: Kilmore Quay Advice pls
I decided on the Shakespeare salt spin mainly because it is 3 piece and would be handy enough to throw into the boot. I'm also going to get a large selection of plugs and lures.
Ideally, I'd like to catch some Bass, Mackers and even Pollack/Cod.
Two things; Firstly, is the rod ok? or is there a better (read cheaper) one out there? Second, what lure and plugs will I buy?
Megabass X-140 SW HT Hama Shirasu 19.5g
Dexters
etc.
Thanks

Re: Kilmore Quay Advice pls
there is decent enough fishin on the burrow with alot of decent flounders 30cm+ turbot and decent bass if there is a good surf...... i find lugworm outfishes rag here so i'd keep the baits to lug straight through for bass and tip lug of with a little bit of mackeral for flounder and a strip of mackerel for turbot id keep the hooks to size 2s on a three hook flapper.... ballyhealy has some good fishing too with flounder and bass and carnsore point has some very good wrasse if u fish near the rocks at the start of de beach use a 1 hook flapper with a size one hook for this because of the rough ground and fish it on a neap tide..... these beaches can become hard to fish bcoz of weed in a southerly wind..... hope this helps
