Bait digging legalities??
Anyone know the legalities behind bait collection in Strangford? I know its an ASSI meaning it 'an offence to damage or destroy a protected scientific interest', however this is vague at best with respect to bait collection. Can anyone help?

Often wondered this myself and i phoned Ards borough council to try and find out but they couldn't help. I've been digging bait at island hill for 30 odd years and no-one has said anything yet.

Re: Bait digging legalities??
we only ever got challanged once at island hill by 2 lads who pulled up in a NIEA jeep. they came over to see what we were at when we were digging lug. i explained that we were just getting a few worms for fishing and back filling our holes. they sort of himmed and haad for a bit, then left us to it. mabey it helped that i had jordan with me or the fact that we were'nt trench digging and did'nt leave the place looking a bombed out war zone. but either way like i said they just left us to it

Thanks guys! Although I'm guessing by the lack of replies this is a very unknown issue. I've contacted NIEA and Loughs Agency and neither seems to know???Al and Jordan wrote:we only ever got challanged once at island hill by 2 lads who pulled up in a NIEA jeep. they came over to see what we were at when we were digging lug. i explained that we were just getting a few worms for fishing and back filling our holes. they sort of himmed and haad for a bit, then left us to it. mabey it helped that i had jordan with me or the fact that we were'nt trench digging and did'nt leave the place looking a bombed out war zone. but either way like i said they just left us to it
It frustrates me when I see cockle pickers illegally foraging the shores and a licence paying, ecologically minded angler cannot dig a few rag for personal use. I recon a digging licence would be a good idea, I'd pay a few quid for the right to dig.
