Re: tope trace ?
can't see any probs with your setup for small(ish) tope there Roger, better err of the side of caution and play it safe, you might even attract the odd smoothie as well

Re: tope trace ?
used 250 last year on the wrecks, thought it's overkill, 100-150 seems to be plenty, just imagine

Pulley rig with at least 150lb mono or wire trace and 6/0 hooks, and cast it as far as you possibly canRichie07 wrote:Sorry for jumping in on your thread but am gonna try for Tope later in the Summer from the shore and was wondering whats the best rig to use and how far do you need to cast, cheers.

Re: tope trace ?
Air on the side of caution!!!! you don't want to loose a fish of a lifetime
Mono sucks for Tope..... better off with wire!!! try Bicycle brake cable crimped. Also have a good stout shock leader Tope skin is very abrasive.

Re: tope trace ?
Agree with Paul on that one, u never know what size of fish might be lurking, and as Paul said, i would rather not lose that fish of a life time, 100/150 Steel trace Wire is the way to go on a pully rig, make sure the body of the trace is around 150+ mono, as normally a tope will twist and wrap him self up ur trace!paul mason wrote:Air on the side of caution!!!! you don't want to loose a fish of a lifetimeMono sucks for Tope..... better off with wire!!! try Bicycle brake cable crimped. Just my 2 cents

Re: tope trace ?
Why not try a short piece of wire Rog. That would be my preference, especially if there was a chance of a bigger fish. Failing that I would go for 200lb mono. I think even a small Tope would make short work of 100lb mono. I sometimes use 250lb mono off the boat and the smaller fish can really shred the mono, especially if you don't get a hook up in the corner of the mouth. I normally have a few made up and change after each fish.

Re: tope trace ?
We had 100lb mono bitten clean off after a short run and some head shaking at the weekend. Stick with the wire.
