Re: Ray time on the Beara.
We were down with paul last weekend and the ray failed to show for us. I was shocked at how high the water temperature was. I fished two ray marks down that way last week and all we had were dogs. Just a run of bad luck i guess, as i saw pauls catch journal and it was very impressive for this time of year. I think the last few days of rain might dampen the fishing but as soon as we hear of good catches again we'll be back down. I had a week in the b&b under pauls expert guiding last year and 2 sessions so far this year all in search of ray and i'm still hunting for my first one. Can't wait to hook my first.

Re: Ray time on the Beara.
I'm down from the 21st staying self catering with some friends. Last year we had great pollack, wrasse, and mullet fishing in late May with things going into overdrive on the second visit in October.
Cod's head this time and maybe Dursey too.

Re: Ray time on the Beara.
If lads took the time to read his link you will see this is not a shore report as such, but simply Ashley posting some details of info that was passed onto him from a local guide in the area.

Re: Ray time on the Beara.
good question... had to look this one up and yes, its defo a spotted ray.saving private brian wrote:well done,,,what type of ray is that,,,,spotted??????????
for the record, and for anyone else who might be interested, other rays that might be caught in our waters include: blonde, thornback, undulate/painted, and cuckoo.
there is also small-eyed ray, eagle ray, sting ray, electric ray, and marbled electric ray but these fish are far less common.
you can thank a book called British Sea Fishes by Dr Frances Dipper for that info......
just thot id share that new-found knowledge there...

I am really confused now as it seems that the Shark trust who have an excellent ray identification http://www.sharktrust.org/content.asp?did=34697guide also list painted ray as one of the common names for the undulate? I always though as you said the painted was also called the small-eyed ray.

Re: Ray time on the Beara.
I've never heard any nick names for the undulate ray. The ray in the photo is a spotted/homelyn ray.

Re: Ray time on the Beara.
undulate and painted ray (Raja undulata) are the same fish as far as this book describessaltydog wrote:Howdy Neil, well thats interesting alright starnge one... there's some info here on both the Painted/Small Eyed: http://www.uk-fish.info/pages/smalleyedray.htmlbaitdigger wrote:saltydog wrote:just for the record Undulate and Painted Ray are not the same fish... Undulate: http://www.uk-fish.info/pages/undulateray.html
the small-eyed (Raja microocellata) has "wavy streaks and blotches on the back. These streaks are pale cream in colour and not edged with white spots"
Two different species there
hey hold on, stop press
undulate - Raja undualta - http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/Species ... dulate+ray
small-eyed - Raja microocellata - http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/Species ... l-eyed+ray
painted - Raja undualta AND/OR Raja microocellata - so EITHER (if you put 'painted ray' into the Common Name box then you are given BOTH)
i'll go with fishbase........ FWIW.....
