Re: mullet
Mullet the fish that can drive you mad, always jumping around when your catching nothing
very hard to catch is the fly the best way to catch them. I have heard using bread on a float is meant to be successful but you have to feed them bread for a few evenings before you attempt this. Problem with that is if you fail to catch them after that you would feel like a proper tool
any other tips to catch them on a slow day?
The finest gift you can give a fisherman is to put a good fish back, and who knows if the fish that you caught isn't someone else's gift to you?"

Re: mullet
There's Mullet in Clare for sure. I have caught a few this year already, almost 2 months earlier then i have seen them before.
I usually fish for them on bread as its my favorite way, have had them on mackerel too but seen a big fish gulp the bread on the surface is awesome, i must try on the fly... sweetcorn never really got them feeding mad like bread does, but maggots are supposed to also be good.
if your using bread put plenty in for them to feed on,patience is key even when seeing dozens of fish feeding and jumping out of the water hooking into one can be tough, you may only catch one or maybe nine:) i use a small float then about 3feet of line to the hook, i cant stress enough.. dont try to stike untill you see the float move.
on a sidenote.. last Saturday i caught a huge Golden Grey Mullet of over 7lbs, i havnt caught many golden greys but he had a golden spot between the eyes and gills, and thinner lips. when i got home i checked to see the Irish record is less the 3lbs i was shocked..maybe i have gotten the exact species wrong? i have pics of the fish which show the golden spot and size of him, although i didnt actually weigh the fish because of the extreme fight and he had double hooked himself making unhooking tough on a size 6 barbed(he took almost 10mins to recover). I dont have a certified scales and killing the fish to get it weighed didn't enter my head. do i simply have to get a certified scales and catch the same fish again to try claim it? this fish was easily 7lbs,personaly i think 7 and a half if not close to 8lbs,he was huge.
cheers:)

Re: mullet
If your thinking of fishing for them on the fly its usually maggots in the rotting seaweed beds or sand hoppers they are after. Have at look at this little article http://zen-sportfishing.com/2011/04/you ... -you-want/ .
There is a pattern on the Salt water fly fishing form called cinoman shrimp. Looks very much like the sand hopper just might want to stick a little bit of foam on top to make it float. I have used it and it tends to hover sub surface rather than float and used it for sea trout never mullet but will be giving it a go.

Re: mullet
A good way to get em,well it always worked for me was if we were fishing in balbriggan harbour, which the common practice was to sort the catch in the harbour, council have banned them now,
,anyway if u find a situation whete they are feeding under a boat ,clear water is preferable, get a mackeral take fillets off and hang the rest off the fish on fishing line about a foot above the shoal, forgot to say get on the trawler, when the mullet start to feed onthe filleted mackeral freeline tiny pieces beside the hung mackeral ,if all goes well u shud get a few, just remember get the hooked fish away from the others as quick as u can,so he dosent scare the rest off,the free lined tactics also work when u have to cast to the shoal,ud be surprised how far u can cast apiece of mackeral on a good rod reel set up,if it works for anyone put up a post havent been able to use this tactic for the last ten years or so ,happy fishing lads
