dead baiting for bass

was just wandering how far to cast when baiting for bass off the beach, and when fishing around esturys to fish at the mouth or into to it, or would spinnig suit this type of fishing better
2011:cod,whiting,coalie,painted ray,flounder,dab,doggie,bull huss,devil fish,rockling,lobster

anywhere between 5 and 40 yards. if you can locate a gulley aim for that.
