Rainbow Trout for Bait?
Has anybody ever used the above for bait
Every time we catch them I keep saying I will keep some for bait and never do
I know i should just try it anyway, just wondering has anyone here used it?

Re: Rainbow Trout for Bait?
Try some salmon while you are at it. I always found that sea trout makes a great bait for pin whiting

Re: Rainbow Trout for Bait?
oily fish so should be a good bait, no doubt. lobster tipped with caviar is a good bait for small sea scorpions and common shore crabs.
ps. joking aside, i have caught double-shots of flounders using ham sandwiches as bait from Glenarm beach

Re: Rainbow Trout for Bait?
Pike anglers use them as bait, . bit dearer than the other pike baits, 8 euro for 6 trout.
I.v never seen anyone use it in the sea tho, i couldn't see it outfishing mackeral.

Re: Rainbow Trout for Bait?
I used bits of farmed salmon recently out in the boat, it caught a doggie. Imagine.

Re: Rainbow Trout for Bait?
Whole Rainbow Trout is a good bait for Common Skate - or so I've heard from Scottish friends. I'd be hard pushed to reach past the Mackeral for a Rainbow myself, though.

Re: Rainbow Trout for Bait?
Its a very good bait for skate as its so oily and tough. The doggies cant tear it apart like mackeral so the bait lasts a long time

Re: Rainbow Trout for Bait?
i have used rainbow trout that i have caught. i caught plenty of dabs using it.
the problem i found was that flesh was very soft and the skin was very tough, it was so tough i reckon it was blunting my hooks and it was a bollocks to remove from the hook for a fresh bit.
but it does work!
