fishing for COD. (how when where) ??

ok so i am interested in finding out as much info as i can about fishing for cod.

i do have my own boat but would only put her to sea in the calmest of water.
my access points would be bundoran or mullaghmore.

so firstly i am wondering if there are even cod to be caught in these areas ?

secondly would i be better fishing from the shore or the boat ?

then (sorry for all the question's but if i dont ask i will never find out) what rig/setup would i be best using ?

any and all info would be greatly appraicated.

i dont know the area and have never fished it but would have thought someone on here would have?the only advice i can give is ask in your local tackle shop ,decent codling are hard to get around here at the moment with only the odd few getting caught,futher down the coast is producing more fish if you know where to go,lug,crab,razor,mussel and squid main baits they normally feed hard on the bottom so any rig that keeps your bait low will work good luck in your quest

thats disgracefull,, 111 views and only 1 person reply back to you... i taught this site was to help each other out....., im sorry mate but im the same as above,, i dont know the area,i live in drogheda myself, but i would have said the same baits as above,,, also what i found works out in the boats is the PINK muppet jigs,, or the PINK hookoi jigs for cod,,, my father fishes a lot down that direction so ill give him a shout for you and get some info,,, ill mail it to you when i find out,,,,, best of luck

same here man. i'm not from out that way. try doing a search in the shore and boat report sections with those locations to see if it helps. you might get lucky

Hows it going Niall, I heard of a few Cod been caught out from Mullaghmore from the boat, plenty of small ones around the breakwater on a filling nite tide so ther must be some bigger fellows about

as said above best baits lug, crab, squid & razor. I'll ask a few guys from that that way during the week & get back to you.

tho funny you should mention the page views and no help !!

i have to say that i have been on this site a while now reading reports and general info and have found some of it very useful.
in the past i have asked a few questions and in all honesty the only person to be any help at all was the "fisherking".

that said, i have also watched the fourms and the same as i have done other new members come in & ask a a general question, only to have the same, loads of page views and no answers.

now lets see how many replys i get after this page !!

anyhow i feel as if this site is very close knit and unless you are not in that circle of friends then you are an outsider so asking a question is like asking one of the members on here if you could sleep with his wife (if he had 1).

all some of us on here is help, to better our knowledge of a sport we all on here love to do.
i dont see the harm in helping others out & personally i get a buzz from helping others out if i can. but that is just me.
i dont understand the unwillingness to not help out !!

well that is my wee rant over for today, feel free to leave any comment if you please.

not to worry man. we meet people all the time when we're out fishing who tell us they read our reports. but when i ask them thier username on the site, 70% of them i've never heard of before and some of them have been on the site for years

. so when asked why do you never post?. the most common asnswer is that they only want information, but have zero interest in contributing anything towards the site. sadly a sign of the times where everyone wants something for nothing

lol well thats very true roger.u always hear about the good days

some people love to hear every bit of info they can get about marks/fish etc.but ask them about info they ave nonje because they dont fish at all.just nosey cxxxs.anyway niall sure give it ago and see how u get on.unfortunately we dont get the cod stocks like the uk does but there is some increase in population of cods stocks showing up which is a good sign.there probabaly wud be a better sign of increased stocks if brussels would change there polocies/quotas.having fisherman dump there cod catch due to try and save stocks but there all dead in the trawl anyway,southern irelands coastline thou has seen a good cod boom but for how long i dont really know.its such a pity that there so scare beacuse they are along with bass an anglers dream catch.wish u luck on ur quest to get some

Just seeing this post,firstly i don't know the area so can't help you out on the how when and where,but would just like to comment on something else.A few posts made referance to the amount of views and no replies,maybe it might have something to do with the fact that people were just having a look at what is a general question and genuinely can't offer any helpful advice.
Regarding other aspects well lets put it this way,i appreciate people are looking for help when they post something but contrary to popular belief, some people are tired of replying to the same questions and topics,that a previous poster would have asked many moons ago.You see there are also posters out there that expect something for nothing when if they were'nt so lazy and used a bit of initiative like reading informative articles online in magazines and books and believe it or not taking a chance themselves then they would learn from personal experience which would be priceless and whilst there has definately been a certain amount of secrecy from time to time regarding giving out information on marks and baits etc this has become a necessity from time to time especially down this way in cork.
You see anglers in general are a secretive lot so when trust is broken by other anglers on hints and tips given in good faith only to have it broadcasted willy nilly then the saying once bitten twice shy springs to mind,and believe it or not after a while it gets very easy to know the people who information can be passed onto in good faith and those that have big mouths as wide as the river lee that sing like a canary and get a buzz from blabbering openly across the air waves because of all the ego been fed from the high fives and back slapping,my rant over

i,v fished out of mullaghmore 7 or 8 times in the charter boats, only ever had one cod, alltho it was a good one at over ten pound,

i haven't been down in three years or i haven't fished it in the winter either so maybe there would be more around now.

It is worth mentioning that some of those viewing numbers could be generated by search engines and as previously said, by anglers who feel have nothing on offer. It is a fact that most of us are fairly protective of our marks but most people will reply by pm if asked. Bass anglers are the worst offenders: A while ago I took out a visiting angler who had posted on this site, two posts one about bass the other about huss, he said he got loads of replies concerning huss but not a single one about Bass. Are cod the new bass? or is there simply a lack of them or people fishing for them around our coastline?

Being a very active member of this site I can tell you that there is no secret clique or buddy group that you should feel left out from. People post and comment where they generally feeel is appropriate to do so. I'd imagine the lack of replies has more to do with the lack of helpful answers to your question. 2 minutes online and you can find out how to catch cod but specific to your area is a tougher answer to get.

All the tips in the world won't catch you fish that arn't there.

The site is a minefield of info, some good, some bad I'd rather have 2 worthy responses to a question rather than 50 replies of no help to me.

There are far more lookers than posters too and by yiour 18 posts in a year suggests you are similar, again that's fine and your choice and is very reflective of any post not just yours.

This site is not an Angling Bible but is very user friendly to all who use it so lets not have a pop because any post dosn't get the desired response.

As for me I'm off to ask who'll make all my gauranteed fish catching rigs for the next comp!

i fish for bass all year round and have no problem giving out info on my was of catching them.but some people dont want to hear about that only the mark you are getting them.when i have put in the time to find the bass. the when and where to find them and what stage of the tide on differant marks all info i have got myself over the years.to give that out lightly is not going to happen only to a very few trusted people.so yes i would agree with you bass anglers are the worst offenders to give out info .

well like my original post says, i was merely asking if anybody on here knew if there were cod to be caught in the areas i said.
other than that all i asked was what rigs to use and what bait.

i am a pike angler, i myself have been guilty of keeping it to myself where the better fish are.

i never asked anyone on this post to reveal their marks nor would i.
i did in a previous post and got the answer i was looking for, very helpful (fisherking)

i am now living very close to the sea but new to sea angling. i hire the charter boat the bundoan star a couple of times every year but am new to the shore seafishing and have not got a clue about anything.
apart from one great day on the mackeral from shore in two years i have been unsuccessfull in beachcasting.

i am not looking for sympathy. just helpful info.

yes my posts are limited on this site but because i have nothing to offer to it i am on it for the knoledge.

codling are not great up north have only ever caught one or two fish finger sized ones but thats from the shore and never from Donegal, seen a few from the boats but apart from that they dont seem to be plentiful here, thats why you got very little repies

circle of friend's?? i joined SAI having never shore fished much and knowing nothing about shore fishing or the people in the club and the welcome i got was unreal. I often spend hours going through old threads for information on venues etc.

i dont post much because i am only learning and most of the time i have very little useful info to contribute. The other thing i see is very experienced anglers giving information that probably took hours of hard work to figure out and getting shot down by know all anglers. everybody should be encouraged to post on the site for everybody to have a greater angling knowledge, any knowledge given by other anglers should be greatly appreciated as it is their generosity that us lesser anglers depend on. however no amount of information will catch fish, it is going out and fishing that will catch fish. Also some people ask generic questions that there is already tons of info already on the net.

on the above topic of cod fishing out of mullaghmore very few have experience of cod fishing including myself, but i would imagine there should be some cod out there but iv never caught them. on a safety side of things be very careful this time of year. Donegal bay is a very lonely place and the water is very cold! the sea at this time of year is only for the experienced boat owner.

the charter skipper out of bundoran is surely the most knowledgable person in the area.

Don't give up yet Niall I too posted this back in the start of the summer http://www.sea-angling-ireland.org/bull ... =1&t=22036 I didn't even get one PM only one reply some guy in the same boat as me. I did eventually get some help from a very helpful angler on here and this was by way of me pming him. This started me off and I had a great summer bass fishing including an 11lber and most of my fish where over 5lb. Only for that guy having a little faith in me I don't think I would have got anything. Needless to say I myself got plenty of PM's then from people looking for the mark but I was unable to help them, as I had promised I wouldn't give out the info given to me in good faith. After people realised I wasn't going to rape the waters I had some great chats in PM's and learned alot. Maybe just get out and give it a go and when people see you reporting good or bad they realise your ok and this is when you start getting the help. Also you can't please all the people all the time just look at the last reply on my post about the 11lber. It sort of put me off trying to have abit of craic as well. 99% of all my post have been encouragment though.
I have no idea of around your area except it seems to be very good for sea trout when in season.
