Re: bait for Bass
Have a look at the old reports. Crab, and big baits of lug etc. Big rag baits at the right time. Full razor baits. They all work at the right time with the right conditions.
List 2010. fish
List 2011: less fish
2012: less fish again,
2013: even less fish.

Re: bait for Bass
Regarding best baits, Going on sales of frozen baits from our shop, peeler crab has been the best seller fairly consistantly, and while here in the south the target species at present are cod, many bass are being caught. But going by the reports we are getting in the shop, the bait which outfishes others for bass has been razor. This winter has seen some fine catches from the coast here so its a just reward for the hardy souls that brave the chill. Happy hunting. Fionn

Re: bait for Bass
to say one bait is best is madness i,ve had one or two now and then and one thing that gets me is how one bait outfishes another and also how the best of bait will be overlooked and a spinner or mackerel feather will be hammered instantly experiment with two rods and different baits on each mark till you work out what bait and where the fish are feeding people who want to catch bass need to think a bit and fish more
baits i have had bass on include
rubber crab(only once)
fresh crab
lug
frozen crab
mac
squid
wraps
ragworm
and razor fresh and frozen
never had one on sandeel as i dont use it much not sure why

Re: bait for Bass
For me, the top two baits to use when targeting bass are lug worm (fresh, not frozen) and razorfish.

Re: bait for Bass
My opinion on bass baits would be, the area you are intending to fish. (NB)- Have a look when the tide is out.
Open beaches would make lug my first choice.
rocky or rough ground - crab.
Estuary's - ragworm
The list is endless, mackerel is another good bait (dead or free lined).
Shrimp is an excellent bait!
Try and learn what/when they are feeding. e.g in early march during a crab molt bass are tunnel visioned on crab!
In September you could bet your life they are gorging on bait fish.
Bass can take almost anything that is offered to them (experiment). Try and cast close to shore, you will be pleasantly surprised!
Trial and error. Enjoy every bit of finding out.

Re: bait for Bass
Lug has to be one of the best baits for bass.when you go out with a few fresh lug your always in with a chance of getting a bass or two

Re: bait for Bass
From my experience razor and lug are by far the best bass baits.
A lug/razor cocktail is excellent.
Crab seems to work in some marks but not in others, once as an experiment I fished one rod with fresh peeler crab and a second with lug/razor. I was casting approximately the same distance and using 4/0 pennel pulleys on both. I didn't have a tap on the crab but caught 4 bass on the lug/razor and had as many missed bites. I was fishing a fairly flat sandy beach.
However, crab will fish well on other marks, particularly in rocky gulleys or on beaches with rocky areas, or estuaries.
Rag can also be a very good bait. I have had a few on mussel too.
I have never had a bass on sandeel, all that seems to attract are dogfish - I would never use it as a bait for bass.
