have seen the frozen shelled prawns work better than other baits at times, especially one day in portrush harbour, guys deep float fishing, just off the bottom around the lifeboat... coalie a cast when other baits were being refused!

I had a wee look in asda at there prawns and I think i will wait to they go in the bargain section.

i like the way you think nicki i'm lucky as there is an asda and tesco superstore just round the corner from me and there is usually a few boxes of reduced goodies in the chiller that can be used as bait
well there is a recession on after all

Prawns are the number 1 bait in Gambia. Can't see why they would not work well here. It's just easier to get other baits most of the time

I am even going to be even tighter and ask asda to keep me them for me if they do get out of date.

good idea mate, better than wasting them. nothing to be embarassed about in that. have you ever fished isle of man where the scallop or "queenie frill" factory is on the harbour. the guys from the factory leave the shells with the left over bits in buckets for the local fishermen to use as bait. a great way to ensure nothing is wasted. i tried this myself under a float and had plenty of fish, but the locals actually free-line this bait and literally pull in fish every 30 secs. i had never tried free-lining in the sea myself much, but when i took the float and weight off i was soon pulling in non-stop macks, coalies and pollack too. i keep meaning to try this tactic over here, but don't get out much in the past few years as my kids are still young. i noticed this year that one of the forum members here has been having a lot of success from the antrim coast rock marks using this method.
let us know if asda do indeed donate the wasted prawns as i would consider asking in my local supermarket too. i missed the programmes on c4 this week, but i do get annoyed about wasteage of seafood in particular. its always a good idea to go in and get the macks when they get reduced too as i'm sure you know

i have done alot of free lining with sandeels and had pollock,macks and coalies and done it also with ragworm for wrasse.
my next try is fly fishing for mullet

we have used prawns a few times.as stated before it was probably as a last minute stand in for worms etc...
had a bit of success with them-always think of using them when i cannot get worm.......worth a go
there is plenty of other things to use as baits and love to see what else others use too.......all ideas welcome

Just picked up 3 packs of cooked mussels for 25p each just for a try

I was in Aldi's last week shopping with the boss. Threw a frozen bag of sea food mix in the trolly and tried it for bait during the week. Small bits of squid,mussel and king prawn. Ideal for tipping off your lug etc. I got small flats using it and even tried some squid on its own with some success. Has to be worth €3.50 a bag.

Hope my cooked mussels work. Will use one hook on a three hook flapper with them bound on and see how they go. 75p for three bags. Got to try it at that price
