when to put the tyres out

#1 Post by saving private brian »

hey lads i havent been on here in ages due to been flat out fixing burst pipes.happy days  .so i hope to get back into the fishing in a big way shortly.im gonna treat myself to a new rod and reel and bits and pieces as we all do 4 this new year.hope every body has a good new year in their personal and fishing life

so i just want to ask a wee question.i am very fortunate to where i am living that i can axcess majority of the baits on the shore required for our fishing trips.(eg)lugs(blow +black),sandeels, small rag(i dont bother with).cockles, razorfish, clams, limpets, shrimps, sprat(when in).

so my area is surrounded and ideal for every type of crab there is know on the irish coast.

this year i wana try and catch my first peelers but im not sure when to try and set me traps for them.i have 4 tyres set aside to be put out in position.i have watched youtube videos but they all seem to be english lads.so can ye tell me when shud i put my traps out and any tips wud be appreciated.dyin to get my new year off with a bang.

thanks brian

first off brian your going to need a lot more tyres than 4 to be getting any crab. you can start lashing them down anytime but dont be expecting many crab this time of year. have ya decided on a location for your traps? what is the ground like where you intend putting them? is there traps already in the area?

gettin more than 4 tyres is not a problem.will just rob the slurry pit again lol.i think the groung is ideal.its rocky with lots of seaweed, very muddy and theres a river near by.the tides covers this area and falls off it on the outgoin tide.trust me a mate told me he spoke to 2 lads who were down gettin them there and they had great success.ive kept an eye out for those lads but never seen them.i dont no where there traps are even but i wudnt be into takin anothers man bait without permission.i wana have my own.i just want to know the when and right procedures of putting down the traps.

If its where I'm thinkin Brian, dont use tyres, salvaged concrete roof tiles much better to get in among the stones, and less obtrusive. The spring moult this far north wont really be in full swing before April unless its a very mild spring tho there's always a few early ones.

I don't think you can put a date on it as it is more weather reliant, the sea temperature will want to go up a few degrees before any moulting takes place so if it is as cold as last spring it may well not start till the end of May

Agree in general. But I was always surprised how just a few sunny days in succession could warm up rocky shallows and get a few early ones to shuffle off the old shell.

I came across a load last year that had frozen to death because they came out too early or the frost was much later than usual.

Pre-frozen peelers? Very handy..... :D

Seriously, lets hope it doesnt happen again this year, a nice early mild spring is what we all need.
