Tackle shops in Galway

#1 Post by mann »

I’m off to bring a mate to the “Galway clinic” in Doughiska so I was thinking of doin a little shopping while I wait for him to come out,

Can anyone please tell me where in Galway I might be able to pick up a floatation suit… found one tackle shop called Duffy’s in doughiska and had a look on they’re site and couldn’t find what I need,

I have also been asked if I could bring home a pot of winkles for a hungry family so I would be happy to know if there is any place handy to Galway where I might be able pick a few.. PM’S Welcome

Just thinking about them winkles is making my mouth water :(

Cheers for any help with either of the above

very poor overpriced shops here in galway, you have duffys on main guard street, freeneys just around the corner and corrib tackle out in the liosban industrial estate.Winkles there are plenty of you can start collecting them at the rocky spit at blackrock only a couple of miles out of the city.Hope this helps

Hi HH

Thanks for the prompt reply… I looked up blackrock on google earth and I could see “blackrock diving board / prom” its just past salthill and it looks like there is a stony area between the prom and Salthill would this be the area your talking about or is it the area a little further on where the finger of land goes out to the bay ??

I will try find time to look in them tackle shops if only to try on any floatation gear they may have - least that way I will know what size to order on the Web sites

Thanks again for the help 8)

1 agree with the lads, the shops in the city are overpriced, for example a set of feathers in one of them was 1 Euro dearer then the same set in my local tackle shop in clifden

Have to say they've both (Corrib & Duffys) been very supportive of us sea anglers this year with sponsorship for youth interpros, club prizes and the fundraisers as well as the Connacht team... deals are there to be had if you don't ask you won't receive and my dealings with both have thought me one thing bulk buys and repeat business doesn't go unnoticed so support your local tackle dealer and they'll support you in return....

Just my two cents FWIW

to the "OP" try to avoid the "horse winkle" they're the ones that are slightly weather beaten looking greyish colouration and a much bigger entrance to the shell... you'll spot them easy enough as they'll stand out for being bigger in size... they're pretty inedible won't do you any harm just not as sweet and delicious as the rest

i went in to duffys in 98 the first young lad to qualify for the irish team and looked for some sponsorship only hooks or line times were very tough for my family then and got told to come back when im famous  thats after my whole family who are fisherman spending plenty of money at the shop for 10 years. Its the point of land past the diving board to get the winkles quite tasty too if your patient.

Went to Galway Thursday and thought I was being clever by bringing my mate to the hospital an hour before his appointed time… he seemed a little disappointed when I said I would feck off to galway instead of sitting with him lol

My plan was to pick a pot of winkles then visit the tackle shops so 20 minutes after dropping him off I was making my way out over some very slippery rocks when my phone rang… it was himself telling me he got done early because someone failed to turn up for they’re appointment,

He had told me earlier it was going to take some time because he had to have check ups and a scan but when he got in they stuck a needle in him and told him to come back in 3 months… can you believe it - having to travel from limerick to galway for an injection,

Anyroad thanks for the advice lads..

Huss Hunter
I found that spot past the diving boards and it looked good but as you can see I didn’t get a chance to pick any, I met a local Asian guy there an he told me “in a very strong irish accent” of another area to pick by the lighthouse,

Actually seen a guy out swimming by the diving board and a shiver ran down my spine at the thought of it,

Cheers lads

Taz, its a fladen suit that I'm looking for but please do send on the link for that site as they are sure to have something i want more than something i need.. thanks
