Cheers Alan,

I have only ever caught 1 rockling ever, at Cushendall boat club jetty. Didnt photo it, long time ago before I understood the importance of recording fish varieties. This one above was caught in a friends creel with a lobster, at Garron point. He had a small cod while out in the boat on feathers and I got a sea trout and some pollack on the fly rod at the shore the same eveing, see below... he ate the rockling and said it was much better than the cod.

Thanks for the ID. The small species are very interesting.

Cathal.

Afraid I havent anything too exciting to report but there are some nice wee codling off Limerick point, Ive seen a few about the pound and a half. I was told by a very good shore angler about a catch he got at the boat club rocks 2 Saturdays ago. 6 codling over 2lb. Besides this lots of small whiting and coley , a few dab, flounder and doggies, thats it really.

You do in fresh water, an FCB rod license. This doesnt apply to the sea. You are probably supposed to return sea trout caught in salt water if there are any guidelines in place at all with reference to it.

Just incase you are wondering, this fish was released and I have 2 witnesses to this effect. It was banjaxed, it swam round in a circle, badly, on the surface and returned to my feet where it head butted the rocks. It was then held in the water for long enough for me to know it wasnt going to recover. Only then was it killed.

I think there is something about a sea trout being over 50cm to be retained, again in relation to legally fishing in freshwater. This one wasnt 50cm but I was averse to throwing it in the tide for a crab to feast on when I could appreciate it much better myself.

Just had a look at the rod licence, folk still refer to them as FCB (fisheries conservancy board) licences but its actually got 'department of culture arts and leisure' at the top of it these days. (see how I dropped that in there!!lol).

All it says in relation to sea trout is that the season for sea trout (salmon, brown trout and rainbow trout..... in fresh water I add) for All Other Waters is 1st March to 31st October. The Erne, Melvin and Bush systems are slightly different.

No mention of a 50cm minimum size on the actual licence itself. I must be thinking of the Loughs Agency or the Donegal (Northern Regional) licence.

Maybe someone can tell me where I'm getting that 50cm thing from???
