mussel???!!!

#1 Post by doublebubble »

Hi lads, just wondering if anyone uses mussel anymore? I remember years ago when it was worth fishing the east coast mussel was a deadly winter bait especially for coalies. I have not fished the likes of greystones in a while and i see there is a few fish showing up again which is brilliant to see but i notice on the reports no one seems to be using mussel!! so just seeing what you guys think??? :?:

I use mussels all the time in the winter and get plenty of whiting and codling on them! i think people dont use them because theyre a pain to shell and bait up with. well worth having though

Mussels a great bait in winter and cheap. I buy a bag in Superquinn boil them for a few seconds until they open and take them out of the shell easily enough..some people don't like boiling them as they think they lose their scent but I find that they work just aswell. Put them in a ziplock bag and I add a bit of salt to toughen them up. For baiting up I put them on a scissors/baiting needle and whip with elastic and then you can slid them up the hook like you would lug, you can also wrap a small bit of frozen black or mackeral alongside it too.

Even cheaper is gathering a few for free. I use it during the winter especially when there's a good surf on. They are easy to pick after digging some worms in a lot of places. I dump them in the sink and pour a kettle of boiled water over them. When they start to open let the water out and run the cold tap. They will still be juicy this way and I just freeze them like Al after that.

mussles r a top winter bait.well worth avin.can be very easily collect in large mounts and can be frozen down as well.they can be a lot of hassel and this puts anglers off.why not shell them at home and freeze them in a container.the bass love them aswell but there definitely one of cods favourite..im gonna go out this evening and get a good few dozen and freeze them for the future sessions that lie ahead.oh dont under estimate the cockle either.ive had coalies, flats on them aswell as a seatrout.deadly tippin bait
