Help getting best use out of my first fishing kit

#1 Post by jawsies »

Hi all,

I've been dying to go sea fishing for years and years so the other day I purchased myself one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002 ... ss_product and a packet of Laden fake lugworms.

So my plan is to go to either Malahide or the wooden bridge out to Bull Island and try some float fishing. The rig I'll be using will consist of the bubble float, then maybe a couple of feet of line a swivel and the triple hook with the shiny fish like-weight on it and a fake lugworm.

Any holes you could pick in this plan to avoid me wasting my time would be appreciated :P

Thanks.

set your float like this, from the hook up.......single hook, app; three feet of line, swivel, bead, light weight, bead, sliding float or bubble float, bead, stop knot.
with the stop knot you can set the depth of your bait, and you can slide the knot up or down the line to vary the depth.
and better with real lugworm or some mac;

Thanks for the reply.

Another question, the only single hooks that the kit came with are #6 Carp hooks. Are these usable or should I head off to a tackle shop?

Stick at it! You'll be thrilled when you catch your first fish.

Personally I'd lose the float and put your bait on the bottom instead. Use real bait - lugworm can be dug for free or alternatively just buy some mackeral from a tackle shop, not very expensive. Keep your line tight and when a fish takes a bite of the bait you will see your rod tip twitching!

if your fishing over the wooden bridge a ragworm might work better,leave some off the hook to wriggle, a one hook flapper with the hook(size 2 plenty big enough) a few inches from the bottom will make your bait flutter in the tide :wink: if your not getting any bites try the beach up at the end of the road with the same rig you might need 2 or 3 oz weight cast out just between the second and third wave and hold your rod tight :D

if your stuff ask some of the guys at the fish tackle shops for advice. i always pick the brains of the ones i go into for advice on where to go, whats good at the min, where stuffs being caught.

its all trial and error i suppose, i do things alot more different than when i was fishing years ago. i only restarted again after 10 years of quitting and im more addicted than i was back then.

this site is a great place to get info and ideas and maybe you will end up meeting someone from the forum and they can help you
