Advice pls on take and nibbles

Hi Lads

Have at last got my tripod and was fishing yesterday in Wicklow.... I was using a cilpped down pennell rig 5 oz and getting out the distance with a good wave rolling in and I have to say a beautful rainbow across the horizon.... after the showers.

What I need to find out if any of you can help me is when I was on the botton the rod was twitching away with my line taught how can I detect a take (even of the flatties) instead of the line and rig just moving with the wave action.... well I even got a brown crab which would explain why my rag was striped bare....

Any help lads would be of great help...

Anybody know how dollymount is fishing.

hi sparkey+1 good luck with the new tri pod .from what your saying on the mail i guess your using a rolling weight when your getting what looks like nibbles.this could be small fish like whiteing and pollack to small for the hook but big enough to move the rod tip. this happens to us all. so try size smaller hooks. or if a rolling{round} weight is used it could be bouncing around with waves and current and moving in and out of gullies in the sand.a moving bait is a good think on clean ground when looking for flats cause a moving bait will cover more ground.if you want a rod tip that is not been moved around try a lead weight with gripers this will cut down the movement. but if the rod tip moves suddenly that's a strike from a fish. but on both types of fishing don't be to keen to strike cause you will pull the bait away from the fish before it hooks it self. well this works for me and id say the other lads will give you some help too. all the best tight lines.

I find the tip action from the waves has its own rhythm, and when you see the rod tip move out of this rhythm it indicates a fish, as Sparkey says dont strike too early , as you might lose the fish or strike too hard or you might end up with a pair of fish lips on your hook

I understand what you are saying and am grateful for the advice, I used a griplead 5oz yesterday and went up from 1/0 to a 2/0 just so I could get the rag on a bit easier yesterday. The nibbles where constent but I could see a rythem with the sea and the wave movement... Thanks DD and I hope to enjoy the tripod....

Have to agree with Determined Dan and Eyesreilly, When flattie fishing a non grippered lead works best to cover ground. There is even the old saying of going on a Flounder Walk when targeting flats, i.e go for a walk and they hook themselves..

Grip leads work best to anchor baits, but some tides will even pull these, so take note of the rythom of the rod tip nodding. Sharp bobs or twitches indicate a change in the rythom and possible interest in your bait.

Are you using a Baiting needle for worm baits as it makes life easy and presents your baits perfectly.
