frustrated by mullet

#1 Post by cathald »

Hi folks

I took the nephew Dylan out for a wee run today as I'm heading to england for a few days and won't be able to take him out for our normal saturday spin with Don and Tom
We headed to bunagee pier in culdaff but there was a few fishing on the pier so I thought we would give Glengad pier a bash as I have not fished there in a long time(20 odd years)
we were banging away at coalies and the odd pollock on the float but nothing on the rods out at distance
Dylan noticed fish at a decent size just below us swimming about,I told him they were mullet, and as I have never caught one we thought we would give them a go.
They are fussy buggers I had a smallish hook on with some bread from my sarnie but they just seemed to swim up to it have a sniff and swim away again,I tried this for about an hour with no success.
Is there any tips and tricks to catching these guys as it would be another species to add to the list and good for Dylan to catch something different

Found this article to be quite informative with regards to fishing for mullet, it's a fish I've never targeted myself but wouldn't mind having a crack at sometime in the future. http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/Sea-Fishing ... q_one.html

cathal try and get down to the waters edge and get on your hunkers, then drop in small bits of bread about three feet out, when a mullet takes a bit.......smack it on the scone with a 4x2, works for me,

I find when mullet are feeding just below you or very close just use a size 6 or 8 hook with 8lb line no weights, floats or anything else. bait the hook with a good piece of bread and just use the weight of the bread for casting. if a fish starts sucking at the bread dont strike straight away let him get the whole thing in its gob, this is the hardest part cos all you want to do is strike but be patient! ground baiting is a must with this method. good luck with it

id agree with davy - have had better success with mackeral - a small piece about less 1 cm with more flesh than skin. groundbaiting with chopped mack and guts can get them goin and if you get a few competing for food they seem to be a bit less cautious - but for sure mullet and frustration seem to go hand in hand.! ;-)

great buss though esp when you can see them, my 6 year ols was mesmirised for a few hour this summer trying for a crackin one just below us on the pier - hooked and lost him witin seconds, but great craic

I spent a few good hours in a marina in France this year, hooked 6 mullet and landed 3. Boy can they put up a good scrap!! But frustrating as hell. I resorted to letting the fish hook itself - I had a waggler float sitting on the surface and once it went under I struck into the fish and this usually resulted in a hook up. If the float was moving around but not under the surface it generally meant the fish was still messing around with the bait, but generally once the float submerged the bait was in its mouth and it was time to strike.

I hear mullet are very adaptive and you can educate them into taking the bait but it involves a few days preparation beforehand, groundbaiting and getting them used to taking that particular type of food source. They seem to have very localised diets depending on what is available but by all accounts you can definitely wean them onto a new food such as bread if you put enough ground bait in for a few days before hand.

I have seen large mullet in around Bunagee Pier and Culdaff river before and would love a go at them 8)
