i have read cortaz article about the tides and the moon and yesterday was supposed to be the best day of the month..so i packed up my gear,dug my bait and headed off to my favourite bass haunt..even on a bad day this place produes a good few bass so i was expecting a big haul..got there bout 2.30 afternoon and fished until about 4.30..it was probably one of the worst days i had there for bites..i caught 4 bass all between 1 and 2 pound but normally it would be hopping with bass..apart from the 4 fish i got no other bites,normally the rod is hopping at this spot..even last month i went down to the cunniger in dungarvan on supposedly the best day of the month..fished it for 4 hours and not even a bite..so my guess is that the fish are either there or they are not and tides and moons are not exactly proven..

went back to the spot i was at last week that i got loads of wrasse, pollack and mackeral in one hour. yesterday spent 5 hours there and got one wrasse and one pollack.
Alot of the time we go out around the fullmoon/new moon we do badly.
agree with dileee the fish are either there or not.
Heading back out this evening will post up results.

ya and i have noticed a good bit of weed around too with the springs .i hope to get out 2mor.the weather is suppose to get better after today.winds decreasing but on saturday i think they are veering to the n/w. direction

Apart from moon and tides weather conditions have to be very important. The moon/tides could be perfect but if you go bait fishing and the sea is flat with little surf you are probably wasting your time, but such conditions would be good for lure fishing. Similarly if you go lure fishing and there is a big surf with coloured water all you will probably catch are clumps of weed.
On 30th/31st of August I was fishing in Kerry when the moon/tidal conditions were at their least promising but there was a big surf which brought in the fish - I had 5 bass and as many missed bites/slackliners.
I would try to bait fish anytime there is a big surf regardless of the moon/tides, although if a big surf coincides with favourable moon/tides then that would of course be the optimum time to bait fish.

ended up with a load of small strap congers and a total haul of 0 bass . sometimes things just dont work out like you hope/expect

I was out today and fished till dark for a big 0 Bass. Water was murky but I have caught in water like this before no problem. Gonna use the dirty water reason anyway for blanking. I really thought it was gonna be a good day ah well

Is that the usual? If so - not that I've been down there very often this year either - I'm only getting the odd fish, but usually almost exactly mid tide, both coming and going. Usually I'd say it doesn't matter down there about state of tide as long as its moving and it is definitely no respecter of solunar theory, from my experience when fishing it loads. Basically that beach has a mind of its own and there is no rhyme nor reason, just have to put in the time there and it seems to reward you accordingly. I'd fish it any time, but a bit of surf helps for the bass alright. We had bass,flounder,dogs and codling from it Saturday (I say we - I only caught one bass ) all to big razor baits - (it was a big flounder).

There are so many variables when you are out fishing that although solunar might play a part (and the only reasonable explanation I could see for it would be for the tidal effects), it can only be a small part. It's a complex system with emergent behaviour. We need chaos theorists working on it.

my theory about the low water thing is probably just due to me having more luck around these times.
and as for the lunar theory, 2 of us had 9 bass down there last year on one of the nights cortaz reckoned would be good. ive fished it over a few of these better nights and the only thing i can say for definate is that on that beach it seems to drive the strap congers crazy

headed down to killiney and ive never seen anything like the weed down there. you couldnt see any sand on the whole beach just mounds even a foot high of brown weed. tried a cast or two but as soon as the tide came up the beach it was unfishable.
moved onto a rock mark in sandycove and got nothing in 3hrs.
tonight better produce something might try the wicklow area.

2 bass caught yesterday on the surface lures between 6 and 9 o clock 2lb and a 7lb couple of missed fish aswell, but on the whole things are not great .....

Was down there recently Dennis and also had a strap conger and a dog....haven't fished there much this year as we had a few blanks early in the season...it fished well in Febuary for awhile. Hopefully it might pick up in the next few weeks...were all those big bass mine

Shankil last night from 7 - 11 one rockling between 5 of us. last 3 days have probably been the worst in longtime. taught this week would be lethal with the tides, moons and bad weather. just goes to show you do need a certain bit of luck when picking your mark.
