Malahide Mullet Marks

#1 Post by lambay »

Hey , I've decided to post a few good mullet marks around Malahide , Dublin .

1.Broadmeadows estuary ( in between malahide and swords and railway viaduct runs across it ) is teeming with large thick-lipped mullet . Very few people fish this estuary and the mullet are'nt used to bread or other baits yet .There are a few marks around the estuary like (1.The Corner which is the south-east corner of the estuary beside the road into the villiage .This is probably the most productive spot and on a good day there can be a hundred mullet or more in this area ) (2. The Bay about 400 metres past Malahide Yacht club dinghy pen there is a small bay that a drainwater pipe runs into this can have quite a few mullet lurking in it and possibly a few flounder :) ) 3. On the far side of the estuary about 600 metres past the huge family of swans there is a point sticking out into the estuary , I havent fished this spot much but have seen lots of mullet here and there is very little chance of anyone else fishing here ) Mullet around this estuary grow very large ,I've been walking along the estuary and seen giant mullet that must have tipped 10lb less than 4 foot from the shore. I would guess that there is flounder lurking around the estuary somewhere but have never come across one , I once found a 1lb + garfish dead on the shore but havent seen any garfish since :? .

2.This mark is a quite small but very fun mark to fish .It is located between the pier beside Malahide scout den and the side of malahide marina .There isnt too many mullet here but a few big mullet can be easily seen grazing about this spot .You have a perfect aeriel view of this whole mark from the path beside The Green ,so you can cast out and see large mullet grazing about slowly edging towards your bait :D (no dropnet is needed as you can get down to the water easily from this path)

3.Malahide Marina has lots of biig mullet sheltering in and around it . If you walk along the marina you can often see big mullet swimming alongside the boats and even under the walkways. The problem with this mark is that you need a boat in the marina or a friend with a boat in the marina to get in :( . Small sandeels swim along the marina too and could probably be netted quite easily .

There are a few other small marks around the area i might exchange for a good boat fishing mark ( especially a wreck ) .Most of these marks are largely unfished and the mullet arent used to any baits yet , I plan to start grounbaiting with bread daily in Broad meadows estuary to get the mullet used to bread and I will post if I do . Will try and get some pictures of these marks and the mullet around them soon . Please comment so i know how you get on at these marks :)

Any questions feel free to pm me :)

i have tried to catch them at the black bridge upper estuary to no avail, they just dont take the hooks, will eat every bit of the bread and spit the hooks out!

i will one day connect to a mullet

any one eating them?

Sorry about that didn't realise fishing wasn't aloud ,no ones ever mentioned it to me when I fish there. You can fish the channel between the marina and the land walkway from the path are some decent mullet in that area

Bad luck Keep at it though eventually you will hook one  as for eating i dont think they taste too great most people are put off by the fact that they suck mud and live next to drainwater pipes
