Fish I.D - Does anyone know what this wee fella is?
K2 was out fishing a local mullet mark the other week when he spotted this little fella and a few of his mates swimming around in the water in front of him.
He wasn’t able to make out what it was in the water because it was so small and so to have a closer look at it he used his net and he managed to pick up this wee fish in it.
He took a very quick picture of it and then put it back in straight away.
When we looked at the picture we both where pretty certain that we knew what it was but we have since shown the picture to a couple of other people and they have gave us different answers to what we thought it was and so we’re not so sure now what it is.
I’d love to identify it if I can and find out for sure exactly what it is out of interest sake.
Does anyone have any ideas of their own what it is?

Could be a rudd, I suppose. I have seen them in the blue ponds in Wexford with Mullet in the same water. Were you in the upper reaches of an estuary where the water isn't saline?

Re: Fish I.D - Does anyone know what this wee fella is?
Just to confuse things more I'll go for a Rudd / Roach cross. The mouth is upturned like a rudd, but the pectorial fins need to be a bit more red to indicate full Rudd. The fish also has that almost blue silver that a young Roach has. Anywhere there is Roach, they normally cross with Rudd and bream and in the case of the Rudd, they normally bread them out after a few years as Rudd are not prolific spawners.

Its a Roach! Rudd have a more golden tinged body with an up-turned bottom lip and also a rudds pectoral fins are more red than on a Roach. When Roach and Rudd hybridise there fin,s slightly go darker.

Re: Fish I.D - Does anyone know what this wee fella is?
Its hard to tell from the picture alone more than likely its a hybrid can't decide just by the colour if its a roach as small rudd can have the silvery colour to them however as jd has pointed out it has a yellow iris which would indicate a rudd as roach have red irises.
Found this as well which might help:
Small rudd tend to be quite silvery/white in appearance with greeny/blue-brown backs and can be difficult to identify from roach, but as they mature their flanks take on a beautiful bronze/golden colour and their fins turn a bright scarlet redThe mouth is distinctive with a steeply angled protruding lower lip.
The eyes have yellow to orange irises as distinct from the red-eyed roach.
Another identifying feature in the rudd is that the beginning of its dorsal fin is set well behind the front of the pelvis fins. In roach, the beginning of the dorsal fin is directly above the base of the pelvic fins.

Rudd 100%. Placement of the dorsal fin proves it.
Don't trust the upturned mouth theory as in both Rudd and Roach it looks upturned until you actually open it.

I still think it's a hybrid.
Not many places left in Ireland with full Rudd. The Randy Roach have set up in most water systems.

Re: Fish I.D - Does anyone know what this wee fella is?
This little fella has caused some confusion hasn’t he!
So you’s have narrowed it down to 2 types of fish then that you think he is, he’s either a Roach or a Rudd. But which one is correct? I'm none the wiser so any more suggestions or help would be welcomed.
Thanks for all your input and thoughts so far guys, it's been interesting reading what you's think it is.

My 2 cents
I think its a roach or roach/rudd hybrid as the roach has a more slim line body with the rudd having a slighty rounder body
