Castlerock???

#1 Post by wishiniwasfishin »

Hi all..... new to the site, and back to fishing after a 13 year break....(what was i thinking?)

Me and a buddy are heading down to castlerock, and i was wondering if you's think it best to fish off the pier or head onto the beach?

Also wondering about types of bait and what we (hopefully) will be expecting to catch.

Look forward to hearing your replys

Cheers

Hi mate, the pier, fished on the river bann side is most popular. My son caught a flatie there a couple of weeks back on mackeral. You can also fish from the rocks at the far end of beach. I'll be at the caravan at castlerock myself for the weekend, but i think i'll try ballintoy or portballintrae, or even portrush, as ive never had much luck at castlerock. Im not long at the saltwater fishing, but really enjoy it. There is an angling shop in coleraine in Society St, called outdoor sports or something and hes good for bait. The other angling shop in the town is useless. Get mackeral, sandeel and ragworm.
good luck, billy

hi mate all of the above bait works, but rag for bass.etc lug for flatties. mackeral for doggies. and so on. the place fishes well when there hasnt been alot of rain as the fish hate the fresh water coming out the river. at this time of year you also have a good chance of mackeral from the pier.
hope this is a help and if you need anymore just message me
best regards
nick

Fished the pier saturday evening, caught nothing except a bloody gale and heavy rain. I walked the dog on castlerock beach on friday and met a man and his son, who had a good days fishing, and the lad had 3 mackrel in a bag, so i was one day late.

We fished off the end of the pier from about 4pm right though to around 10 that evening,

Together we caught 5 flounder and 3 weaver every thing was tiny so it all went back!

There was a few boys spinning and pulling a few mackerel in, had a wee go at that as well, but didn't fair so good.

The wind was a nightmare, got a good soaking as the waves crashed over us. lol

Good day out tho.
