Tips for Ballyvaughan/North Clare

#1 Post by Stephen8wood »

I'm heading to North Clare for a few days. Would anyone out there have any tips for marks close to Ballyvaughan. I'll refrain from bringing the cans of lager and disposable bbqs with me so there would be no need to worry  Any help would be appreciated. I'm mainly lure fishing for pollock, bass and macs at the moment.
Thanks,
Stephen

Black head is the obvious choice but its fished heavily. If i was heading down that direction i would fish in Ballyreen its about 15 miles away towards Lisdoonvarna. Its a great spot for macks and pollock but its a job in a half reaching the spot. You have to navigate down a steep cliff (there is a track down) so its not for the faint hearted. Once you are down the cliff head to the left and look for the low number markers for competitions. The last time i fished here (4 years ago) i caught about 50 macks and had to put some back. Its a very rocky area but if you cast out about 70-100 yards the bottom is sandy.

The light house on Black head. walk about 200 yards to the ballyvaughan side, there is a drop off in the water and floating for Pollock there on last 2 hrs incoming tide and first 2 retreating. some of the best fishing i have had for macks there also. Ballyreen is good and also poulsalla just south of pub in Fanore. some nice bottom fishing to be had.
Always CAR! unless its a pollock...!

2012 species: Pollock, Mack, Coalfish, Gurnard, Bullhuss, Dogfish and Wrasse.
Would do anything for a bass!

I know Blackhead and Fanore. Where is Ballyreen in relation to either of these locations? I'm finding it difficult to locate it on a map.

Thanks.

it's before the bends start, the guy in the tackle shop in Fanore (opposite the pub) will fill you in on the details. He is a sound man by all accounts.

If you need any encouragement I caught this today from the last of the marks I mentioned to you. About ten yards off the rocks on Rag.

ballyreen, is on the osi map as poulsallagh further on the road inland you will see the townland ballyryan where the name comes from

if you head down to the low numbers as mentioned above, be very wary even on a calm enough day the waves are extremely dangerous - and dont go near the blue pool despite the temptations - its a killer, literally
