Anyone use mussels for bait? What are they good for catching and what is the best way to get them out of ther shell??

SALMONELLA if you buy them from the supermarket . But that's OK because the shells are already open .

In my (limited) experience too much hassle to use as bait - for flatties - need bait (sherring) elastic to keep them on then the crabs eat the whole lot anyway . Best to take them home , steam in a little white wine etc . Moulles Marniere if you want the poncy name !

plaice, dabs, flounder, coalies, whiting, codling are all likely candidates. wrasse will take them too but tougher baits are better. you can remove them from their shelves easily enough with your thumb. otherwise use a butter knife or similar(don't use a sharp blade!). u can whip them on hooks as needed or whip a load onto a baiting needle. then cut of the required size and thread it onto the hook.

Top mussel baits are in a worm cocktail for plaice, singely for coalies or in a big sausage bait for cod around Dublin.

U can even used pre-cooked mussels bought from somewhere like Tesco - I had a killing at Bunagee Pier last autumn with them, 40-50 coalies landed easily between two of us. They were taking everything we offered them, but the mussels seemed to work best.

i found them to be very effective for cod when put 2 or 3 inside a squid hood.
for anybody in cork you can get a bag for 5 euro just meat in the English market in the freezers the have at the end
