shockleader,rigs,etc..
Lads could you answer a couple of questions regarding leaders, home made traces etc.At the moment i,m using 30lb main line,to this i attach 50lb shockleader which runs twice the length of the rod and about six turns on the reel and to the end of the shock leader i have a snap swivel for fast replacement of traces when needed.I have been making traces from the 50 shock leader spool which is lastly connected to the weight asuming that if i was on a beach casting out a 4 or 5 oz weight that would be the right strengh to use.
Q1.Is this right what i,m doing ie making traces with the shock leader too..
Q2.If i got snagged would the weaker 30lb line snap rather than the stronger shockleader.
Q3 What is preferable in the making of a paternoster..bring the shock leader through a swivel eye to attach hook lengths to or use 3way swivels shock leader tied to 2 sides ? Then with beads either side would you need crimps to hold the beads in place or would blood knots be ok ? thanks....

Re: shockleader,rigs,etc..
1: yes thats correct, i use 60lb shock leader with about 8-10 turns on the spool and i make traces with the same shock.
2: yes it would, but 30lb line is very strong so you would only snap the line if the lead was properly wedged in a rock. if the hook was caught it should just bend out.
3: Heres how i make rigs. Tie a size 6 or 4 swivel onto your chosen length of rig body line, in your case a length of 50lb shock leader. Slide on a crimp, then a bead, then a size 10 swivel, then another bead and finally another crimp. do this as many times as you need hook lengths, i.e. for 3 hooks repeat that sequence 3 times. then crimp them in place an equal length apart. Then tie on your hook length and hooks.
Hope this helps. Its sounds like your doing most things right but i would recommend that you drop the strength of your main line to 15-18 pound breaking strain. 30 pound really isn't necessary unless your doing very heavy fishing. Plus lighter line will give you a longer cast, which is always a bonus.

Re: shockleader,rigs,etc..
Cheers Alex for your swift reply, had all the gear out waiting to make a few rigs up so now i can potter away. One question...which is the stronger a no.6 or a no.4,i use a no.6 at the moment but noticed that between two packs a pack of swivels and a pack of slip swivels that were both no.6 but the kg. was differant,thanks...fishinmidget wrote:1: yes thats correct, i use 60lb shock leader with about 8-10 turns on the spool and i make traces with the same shock.

Re: shockleader,rigs,etc..
Generally the lower the number the bigger and stronger the swivel is, just like hooks. The standard and snap swivels handle different breaking strains as the snap swivel has extra parts leading it to be weaker, or maybe stronger depending on how the manufacturer rates the load capacity.

Re: shockleader,rigs,etc..
if you want to make your own rigs you could buy a few different ready made ones and just copy them ,breakaway tackle do some cracking rig components and have rig details with pictures and instructions on their website
two i use are the imp and the proper pully

If I use a 4oz weight I put on a 50lb leader with a 5oz I would use 60lb and so on
Shakespeare's beach rigs all come with a rig guide that show about 10 rigs with picture's of the rigs and what components plus they give you hook size/main line weight and snood line weight

Re: shockleader,rigs,etc..
Hi, I'm new to all this and some of the information here is very useful. Just one thing. Is it possible to also use a shockleader on a multiplier reel with a level wind. Will the knot affect the casting or will it even reel in through the level wind. Cheers.
Good things come to those who bait.

Re: shockleader,rigs,etc..
No, not really. It doesn't really work and i wouldn't recommend it. It will rel in through the level wind, but casting will more than likely result in a birds nest.

Re: shockleader,rigs,etc..
i use a shockleader on my multiplier with a level wind but use a tapered leader with a blood knot to keep it tidy and slim and it should work fine
