Thornback Tagging
Has anybody ever caught a tagged thornback or taken part in a tagging programme involving thornies ?
I heard recently of one that was tagged in Roundstone , Connemara and 10 days later it was caught off the Donegal coast .
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Re: Thornback Tagging
i inquired about the ray tagging program last year and got this response
Dear Gerry,
Thanks for getting in touch. The tagging programme has been ongoing for
40 years and is mainly undertaken by charter boat skippers who tag most
of the cartilagenous species that are landed on their boats. Fish are
tagged and released and we gain much information about them when they
are recaptured. Recapture rates vary depending on species. Locally
distributed species tend to be captured more frequently while species
which migrate long distances are less frequently encountered. Blue shark
is the most tagged species through this programme - approx 19,000 have
been tagged out of a total of 40,000 fish tagged to date.
I would be interested in the numbers and species of ray you catch in
Clifden. Please let me know and we can decide on how to proceed.
Regards
I replied and gave all the information but did not get any reply,I sent 3 or 4 more emails without any reply
if anyone want the email of the lad in charge of the tagging pm me

Thanks for all the replies on this one , I think an approach to the fisheries is on the cards , if we can get a few more names together and approach as a group that would be great .

Re: Thornback Tagging
I think as peter said it would be better approach as a group, probably one of the biggest cost in the tagging is the tool for putting in the tags,I would have no problem buying one if I could take part in the program or paying for the tags as welllucky wrote:gerry... maybe if we got enough people to email the wfb if might change there mind.... i am only gessing but i think it would probaly cost to much for the tags on the wfb behalf... but enough people where interested we could make a donation towards cost....... what do other think.........
if more rays were tagged I think it would encourage more lads in to the tagging program as well,it a great feeling to know you caught a ray and it has your number on it and you are waiting to see if it is caught again and where and I think it would also encourage any lad that caught a ray with a tag and but didn't know about the program to the release any ray they came across
if people want to pm me their names and the areas they mainly fish I will get on to the wfb again and see will I get a better response this time

Maybe I'm too much of a cynic, but I can't help wondering if the info gained from tagging programmes is made available to commercial fishermen to help them catch more fish......

thats exactly what its used for. to be able to track fish as they move along the coast. how they migrate and where they migrate to they can nearly time them on the calender

Re: Thornback Tagging
with the tagging programme running for 40 years i am sure we would have heard if the commercial fishermen had used the information gained from it by now
the commercial fishermen can gain a lot more up to date information from reports from this website and other websites then the tagging programme
so far 25 people interested in the tagging programme including a sea angling club and a tackle shop
I am thinking with all the ray the 25 lads caught between them last year it was probably more then the charter boat skippers tagged because of fewer trips out due to bad weather

Re: Thornback Tagging
The tagging scheme is run by the Central Fisheries Board, assisted by staff in the regional boards, but it is mainly only done by charter skippers. The equipment costs money, and in the past they have had bad experiences with private anglers who wanted to participate and were issued tagging kits, but could never be tracked down when the kits and info on tagged fish were required to be returned. I can request a tagging kit from CFB if needed, but would only be prepared to obtain them for anglers that a) I know personally and can be sure will return them and b) catch enough cartilaginous fish to make it worthwhile.
Absolutely not. Do you think charter skippers would participate in the project if they thought for a second the data would be made available to commercial fishermen? This has been discussed at length with the charter skippers and they are happy to participate.Tanglerat wrote:Maybe I'm too much of a cynic, but I can't help wondering if the info gained from tagging programmes is made available to commercial fishermen to help them catch more fish......
Its called fishing, not catching. If it was called catching it wouldn't be fishing!
