gud beach fixed spool reels.any suggestions

#1 Post by saving private brian »

hi lads.after my trip to derry/donegal fishing my 5 mth old shakespeare surf master fixed spool seems to be knackered.a piece of scrap since day 1.when im reeling its seems like its missing gears inside. a funny sound then goes back to normal.this repeats its self.even when im seeting up for a cast and i want to lift the weight off the sand to a casting position it struggles.i used it for mackerel off a cliff so i think this is where the damage was done

So im gonna buy a new fixed spool for a reasonable price.can any 1 suggest gud makes and models for me and roughly how much i mite pick 1 up for

thanx lads

Hi Brian,

There’s so many to chose from its unreal, I took the advise of a friend about 4 years ago and got myself this reel “surfmaster” and its still going strong after a severe thrashing for the first 3 years,
Still in use now and is well looked after,

http://www.gerrysfishing.com/shop_detai ... 6&tabID=55

As for using a fixed spool for the mackerel where you have to drag them up a cliff face I went for the “Daiwa DF100” and got 3 hard mackerel bashing years from it before it started to slip the gears, I still have it and after a visit to “Johnny Doc’s” tackle shop, where he let me look over the newer type DF100 reel that was damaged I found they now put in a spacer or wear washer to keep the gears pushed together, my older type hasn’t got this but I reckon a washer will sort the problem for me,

I think he was selling these for €50 and if they are as good as the older type I would invest in another but for now I use a boat multiplier with the level wind taken off.

I know a chap here in limerick that has 2 of the older type “surfmasters” still new in the box’s if you want to have a chat with him you might get them handy, if you got the 2 and anything happens to one then you will have plenty of spare parts for the other, that’s just me thinking ahead

a fixed spool isnt a winch like a multiplier, pump and wind if you have a weight on the end and you wont strip the gears if you want a winch buy a penn 525 or slosh 30.
ive seen more fixed spools wrecked when weed is abundant if used properly a decent fixed spool should last at least a year and a good one at least 2

I've been using an an Abu Garcia Cardinal C178 for about 6 mths. 60 euros and can't fault it. I don't get out half as much as I'd like to but I've used it from the beach and from rock marks and it seems sturdy enough and a good all rounder.Line capacity of 325 yards capacity with 20 lbs line.
