Right, some of you didn't show up but such is life
Looked at the beach, all the tackle and decided to fish off the flattish rocks on the sligo town end, past the small cove.
We started around 11 with HW due at 11:30 am. First disappointment was that we could not find a single mackerel. Nada. Float fishing produced very little as well although someone did spook a large sea-trout up near the cliffs. I am revising the mark description, so check there for more details. What was really disappointing was the lack of any decent pollack - in the end we had two 1 lb fish to the float but that was it. Bottom fishing produced a string of dogfish, all of which were very dark in colour which is odd for a sandy bottom. Anyone come across that before?
Besdt fish went to Iain who landed a nice 1.25 - 1.5 lb sea trout right at the death spinning a plug near the point out towards an underwater reef he had spotted. We fished into the bay rather than into the surf on the far side - would be worth a try beachcasting but I did not have the rod with me. Snapped my lovely spinning rod right off at the base which gives me an excuse to go off and buy the Shimano Exage I have been looking at....
Lovely day, good fun with the lads, not an ideal venue for a competition however so I will think some more on this. The trek to the far end where we fished before with such success is just too far / too exposed if the weather turns bad. The cove might produce flatfish off the shore... and there are some interesting steep shingle beaches in the area that might be worth a visit some time. Not a single wrasse which was just incredible, very odd day's fishing.
Still, it beats work!
