will it be a good cod year or not
Hi all,
just wondering what people's thoughts are for the upcoming "cod" season. Is there a possibility of a few fish running or is it going to be very hit and miss.Do we need plenty of storms to bring them in to shore along with real cold weather and lots of smallies showing up in the next few weeks as in years gone by.
Its just that i've been looking at a few of my old fishing diaries and the common theme was cold snaps storms and lots of small codling around this time of year.I promise i won't come back in the spring and say but joe bloggs told us all we would have agreat season.
Any feelings ,me personally i'm not holding out for too much as last year was so poor generally and also there appeared to be a lack of cod from the boats during the summer back this way[cork harbour],normally they would show whilst out messing around for macks during the autumn.

Re: will it be a good cod year or not
Last year from the boat I coludn't catch a cod to save my life.
This year in the past few weeks I have caught quite a few around the 2lb mark.
Don't know if this helps for Cork.

Re: will it be a good cod year or not
was out on seahunter in august out of about 12 we boated about 30 or 40 codling between 2-7lb not that far from the shore.last years season wasn t that much of a dister for some i saw 2 double figure cod caught[it was t me
] i only got about 10 codling in the season the biggest been 4lb .the signs are good for this year theres to some very big storms this year which i hope will bring the cod
.I was told afew months ago that it s a three year cycle whiting one year ,coalies the next and then the cod
so if last seson was the whiting
the year before was the coalies then this year i hope will be the cods year

Re: will it be a good cod year or not
So it looks like i'll be sharpening the big hooks once again in hope of a few .Youngrod you did'nt do too bad to land a few last year as i think i only had a handful and nothing over 1lb.Ithink there might be something to that theory on differant years having strong runs of certain fish.I never had so many whitting as i did last year and real big too,the same happened in the past and bingo the following year the cod showed.
Seanie i reckon you could be right on your secret mark,if you want i'll check it out for you before you venture down there
.I suppose all this crap wind and weed has an upside just a pity it happens to coincide with what is my fav part of the year for the silver spiky fellas

Yeah, there's a lot small codling showing up in the harbour at the moment. About a month ago I spotted a good number caught off the quays in Cobh by lads fishing for mackeral

Re: will it be a good cod year or not
going to be a cracking year for the cod already off to a great start only last weekend had 7 codling in the 1lb to 3lb size hundreds under that size and a few coalis in the 2lb region hard to root the bigger fish out of the pickers but well worth the effort

Re: will it be a good cod year or not
The Cork Small boats is normally a decent indicator if there are a few Cod about. With that Many Boats trying for them it should let you know how easy or hard they were to catch. Last year only 4 boats (out of 32ish) managed to catch a cod over 4 days fishing. I think it was a bit better this year, but don't know exactly how much. Try www.skuaangling.net for the results. I was fishing just before the small Boats and we managed to afew to 9lb not too far from the mouth of the harbour

Re: will it be a good cod year or not
i suppose wether we get a good cod season or not depends on what the comercial boats leave for us few months back our club had a comp up the north antrim coast and codling were caught next thing heard was that none were getting caught me and round-our-way were out wednesday nite and had a few codling very small but as fat as f**k so who knows but i suppose what ive said doesnt answer the question

Re: will it be a good cod year or not
Between 2 of us on a 3 hour session yesterday evening we caught 23 codling and a few other species. At first they were only small, about 8 - 10 inches in length but we got a few bigger ones by the end of the evening. I'm bad at judging weight and i don't have a scales but there were a few between 1-2 lbs anyway, they might have weighed more than that. One up one downs came in with two codling on a few times. Gonna be a good year i'd say. The small ones are only leading the way for the big mouthed, rod bending, double figured fellas that we're all hoping will show soon. That session was off a shore mark too.
Species 2014: whiting, coalie, pouting, codling, pollack, ballan wrasse, dab, poor cod, mackerel, grey gurnard, conger, ling, cuckoo wrasse, launce, common skate, bass, scad, garfish, blue shark
Species 2015: Ballan wrasse, poor cod, pollack, ling, flounder, turbot, mackerel, whiting, lsd, dab, grey gurnard, pouting, cuckoo wrasse, cod

If you are interested in bagging a cod along the South Coast I'd suggest tonight would be a good bet. After the storm last night there's a massive surf. Conditions will be excellent.

ok lads any likely cod hotspots around north kerry /west limerick. i've come across an odd one here and there over the years but nothing steady or reliable. caught plenty off the boats so they must be available from the shore too at this time of year ( hopefully ).
