Thats just crazy, but also not at all surprising. I spend a week in Florida fishing earlier this year and every single day I saw at least 10 large shark, many much bigger, and including one run in with a hammerhead of about 15ft according to the skipper. For them to say it's a once in a lifetime sight is nothing short of a lie.
Short and simple, the US has no concept of catch and release so it doesn't surprise me that this happened. I was given a bollocking on a party boat fishing trip for releasing fish as I had no inclination to kill , and no use for them if I did. If that's the attitude of established and well respected skippers then does it surprise you that scenes like this appear all the time over there?

its probably something like fishing for the likes of tope using single barbless hooks on 50lb mono snoods instead of 8/0 barbed pennels on 200lb mono or wire.

i cant see the problem, they caught a shark with a gaff, the shark had it coming, it ate their swordfish!!! at the end of the day they ate the shark and put it to good use so i cant see any problem??

Well depends on how they feel about the lead being used. It might pollute! We could all end up hugging trees in a field. On a good note they might shaft FF and NAMA.

As for the video posted you can't call it fishing because of the way the caught the fish. I can't see how it was news worthy to be honest. Now if one had jumped in and battered the shark or vice versa that would be a story.

catch and release in florida they do on some species you also have to buy a licence i think your allowed keep two fish this variies from state to state but also in the states most of the bays are heavily polluted and you cant eat the fish anyway
san francisco huge turbot salmon and bass are all put back as you cant eat them the licence is strictly inforced by the fisheries board all charters coming back to port are inspected and any fish taken above the allowed amount ie 1 salmon per angler the skipper is fined and get suspended from fishing for a few days this insures that the skippers stick to the rules strictly. mako sharks in florida are like mackeral here there are huge amounts of them along with bulls hammerheads and about 100 other breeds of shark so there seen as vermin there. so the lads in the video with the gaff would not see any wrong in what they were doing. different strokes for different folks

So your telling me that you see nothing wrong in pointlessly killing an animal that is listed on the IUCN as vulnerable? There is a huge difference between killing an apex predator such as this shark and a mackeral. Fishing is fishing - but this here isn't fishing. It's mindless and pointless slaughter of an increasing rare animal

Agree with you Shane, and id say them yanks would break their heart laughing watching us catching pin whiting and micro flats, as has been the case most of the time ive fished lately.Horses for courses
