split cane rebuild
I have a old split cane boat rod which I have stripped down to bare bamboo. I have sanded it down and is now ready for the protective coat which I want do do before I put the new guides on etc etc. But too many to chose from
I was thinking of spraying it instead of using modern rod varnish etc.
any ideas?

Re: split cane rebuild
I wouldn't paint it because it will losse that "classic look"
There is a lot of info on split cane re-builds on the web. Most if not all will be related to fly rods, but the information should hold up.
good luck,
Kev

Re: split cane rebuild
Thanks lads,
Shane your fishing the leinster u21s ent ya? I was fishing the last one in 5 mile point. I dont have a rod turner so I need something that wont sag or drip too much on the rod blank. I tested a sample piece on a old blank today using lacker which I sprayed on it seemed ok but am still open to suggestions

Re: split cane rebuild
I've built a few fly rods but never touched bamboo.
Best of luck with is as they can look very nice when refurbished.
Put up a few before and after pics when your finished.

Re: split cane rebuild
The old,

The new,

Still have to tidy up and the epoxy the whippings so far so good for my first rebuild
The beech handle was a mess , I ended up spending about 7 hours re-grooving all of it
