Live updates from Tigger 2 today. Orkney ll chasing blues :)

#1 Post by petekd »

Right so, just for a bit of crack :-)

myself and scotsman following a breakfast of coffee, cigs and mistakenly swallowed rubby dubby splashes are currently steaming out past the Old Head of Kinsale in pursuit of a blue shark for the little longliner :-) will try to keep progress updated through the day if mobile coverage continues. Wish us luck and pray we dont get towed back to Lees native scotland if we get stuck into a big un :-)

Live from 3 miles off the Old Head :-) Plan working a dream, we have had 6 runs and boated 2 blues :-) 1 of 50 for me and a virginity smashing 60 for Lee.:-) The balloons are bobbing but we are on our last bag of dubby. Great day :-)

Mobile reception or rather lack of it wrecked the live updates as the action was happening im afraid. We went out more in hope than expectation with success being a run never mind actually boating a fish. Neither of us had any experience for the big boys outside charters so the day was going to be interesting :-).

We headed out last night to gather the macs for the dubby and after leaving them outside to soften up overnight pounded the bejaysus out of them with a sledgehammer in a barrel :-) In the absence of fish oil we used vegetable, in the absence of bran, we used porridge oats and wholemeal flour, oh and a boil in the bag basmati rice :-)

We headed for some deep water about 5 mile off the old head I had come across last year and always intended to return and have a go as it seemed too sharky to ignore. In the absence of a dubby bag, we butchered lees old finely meshed landing net and before long, we had a fine slick going with garfish showing and providing great sport from the off.

It was 90 minutes before the first run and confirmation indeed that firstly the hunch had been right and secondly that the theory had been put into practise correctly. Sadly it escaped after tearing off maybe 20 yards or so and dropping the bait. An hour later and another dropped run though and we got stuck in proper.:-) After a 20 minute or so battle, I had a nice blue of 50ish into the boat.:-)

Lee had a run dropped immediately after. Soon afterwards, Lees rod burst into life, it was his turn to get in on the action and a dour fight ensued as he played his first ever shark calmly and carefully to the boat inside a half hour. Lees first shark and biggest fish to date came in, a nice fish of 60lbs or more:-) With my balloon on the way out and Lee rerigging, he was lucky to keep his fingers and rod in one piece as a fish absolutely smashed him to pieces as with his bait trailing in the water he was attaching his balloon! Guess he had the right depth so :-)

That was the end of the fun, with a total of 7 runs and 2 boated fish it was 2 tired but happy anglers that made their way back to oysterhaven.

Brilliant when a plan comes together and especially when you do it all on your ownio :-) Great to see fish like that at the side of the little longliner. The majority of the fish came along at about 3 to 4 mile offshore so easily reachable in good conditions. Ill pop a few pics up on Monday. Thanks to Mohawk for showing me how to make dubby last year and cheers to JW for the rig advice. Cracking day out.:-).
