just a heads up to anyone hoping to catch a salmon or sea-trout , there has been a mini monsoon in the connemara area since 2 pm today, and it is forecast to continue through the night so there should be a good run of fish into all the systems localy.

got caught out in that today ,looked in the river beside work to day and never saw it so high,should be a good run later

Which river was that gf? Rain was so localised that some rivers got torrential floods while others got nothing. I know Casla got nothing, and the Clare river was dead low last night but rising, while the Erriff pretty much burst its banks...

And guess what, the salmon farm in Killary went bust this year and is not operating anymore.

Disappointing though the salmon catches were, the joy of July was the good run of seatrout, especially in the second half of the month. Although large trout were not numerous, there were plenty of smaller fish and some anglers had brilliant bags on Doolough and Glencullin Lough in particular.

“Just like the old days”, was a frequent refrain. Not quite, but it is clear that the progress made over the last two seasons has been greatly boosted by the demise of the Killary salmon farms (now in liquidation). No sea lice, no problem.

That is genuinely good news. I am happy to hear that there are plenty of fish running. Its a pity though once again only partial and selective reporting of whats going on from people in the know.

What about the Dawros river that runs into Ballinakill bay? (salmon farm)

July:The majority during low water conditions and at times of the low tide when one would not expect fish to run. Approx 15% of the electronic total!
Sea Trout fishing for the month was good with 91 fish landed and an improvement of 40% for last year’s July total. Given that most anglers were concentrating on salmon throughout the river as opposed to the lakes, this bodes well for the trout anglers in August and September.

And Inagh/Ballynahinch that run into Beirteragh bui Bay? The Bay that this thread was started about in the first place? (salmon farm)

July 22nd:44 sea tout were recorded for the week. Most of the fish were caught on the lake, but the better fish were taken on the river. Rod McGahan caught 3 sea trout in an hour on Greenpoint, the biggest being 4lbs. The fish took a Black Pennell and was a beauty I'm told. Larry McCarthys party of 4 rods fished 2 days and recorded 14 sea trout on wetfly from the lake. Top flies were Dabblers and Daddies. The sea trout are lice free and better sized than last year, however the number of fish in the system is less than last year.

August 5th:47 Sea Trout were reported for the week. Robert Molton fished Greenpoint beat and recorded 8 sea trout to 2lbs, all the fish took a Black Pennell. Brandon Reo (USA) fished the Trout Pool for an evening and caught five Brown Trout and five Sea Trout to 1.25lbs. All fish took a Butcher.

And yes I am also being selective but getting any type of information from the fisherys is virtually impossible. Why is it so hard to get all the information out into the debate?????? Selective reporting only leads to suspicion and weakens the arguement IMO.

he report from delphi is correct, no lice no problem. ballinahinch and kylemore both have salmon farms in their easturies where the lice numbers are being effectively managed,hence happy fishermen and happy fish farmers. it goes to show that the y can coexist tigether when they are both managed properly.

I genuinely hope the fishing stays this good for this year and years to come. Returns like this really dont help the arguement that the percieved problems are only down to salmon farms.

In spite of a few good days on Inagh lately, unfortunately the fish counter shows that numbers of sea trout are well down on last year, about one third of the number that ran up to this time last year have come in so far. Inagh has enjoyed good sea trout fishing for a number of years now since the farm closed in the bay, how long that lasts remains to be seen. I too hope for good fishing for years to come, but I wouldn't hold my breath. 52 sea trout to 12 anglers would have been a quiet day 20 years ago. There were 38 sea trout recorded for the other 6 days last week. I know one of the guys who was fishing and he said most of the sea trout were less than half a pound, not exactly tremendous sport.

there is no pleasing some people . there are sea trout in inagh, but they are small, 12 anglers caught 52 sea trout- but doesnt seem to be enough, only 38 sea trout were caught for the rest of the week- also not enough aparently.
look, there are good runs of sea trout and salmon into the river systems of connemara at the moment, salmon farm or no salmon in the easturies of the rivers.
this probably has more to do with the efforts of mother nature by providing plenty of marine food for the fish in the spring and plenty of water since
