Co down newbie, a few questions

hi all
started piking with a m8 this year and now have a lot of sea fishing kit as well.
I've tried bangor pier,d'dee pier and rocks behind marina but not had much success.

what are the best baits to use from the piers?
I've tried casting feathers with no success, baited hooks with mackerel strips and still nowt.

I've been out quite a few times but am nearly always blanking.

Is it wrong baits or bad techniques (probably the latter!)?

any advice appreciated folks

Ragworm is the Answer,
2 Hook Scratching Rigs,
Don't try to cast to the Horizon cos on a Pier the Fish are right at your feet.
I'm from Millisle so know the area pretty well, any questions ask away.

I take it my 9ft spinning rod would be a better option for the piers than the 12ft beachcasters I have?

What about beach fishing at millisle,with the amount of worms there,is it not a haven?

anywhere within strangford thats worth trying?

sorry for the questions but sea fishing is new to me although I'm getting to grips with the coarse stuff ok.

As for pier yes beachcaster over kill. Drop rag strait down end off donagadee pier for wrasse.

Portaferry good for a few kind of fish again rag best in my book. try pier were ferry comes in other old fishing pier at end of town ok but tackle grave yard. Again k2 has all the info on this mark click his name and go to link for his web site full of great tips and marks with some great pics too.

We try get meets together if you drive k2 always looking lift for meets so contact him and come to next one, thats how i learnt from k2 , ron and shock great lads happy to help.

I'm learning already.
bought some rag from t&t in bangor and spent the afternoon at d'dee pier.
used a float and fished rag as was stated.
caught 1 5" wrasse and what looked like a small whiting around the same size.
float went under about 20 times but think I had a wrong hook on or again bad technique for striking..

what was funny was 2 mothers turned up with their daughters whowere plaguing them to go fishing.
£3 rod and reel setup from a toy shop and the youngest caught a pollack which I weighed for her at 1lb 2oz,on a strip of mackerel.
right down the wall of the pier about 3 feet down from me!

another guy turned up and pulled in a wrasse as well.

chuffed because it's the first time I caught proper fish there.

again, many thanks for advice.

will give K2 a look up and yes I drive but the missus uses the car a lot,
do you think he could fit the rod on the back of my motorbike?

went back to the pier around 3pm with the rest of the rag worm.
the wife came along and a m8 and his young kid.

I used the ragworm while the m8 and his son used feathers.

only catch was a small 4" pollack,on the rag!
again had a lot of takes with float going well under but no fish on the hook.
what size of hooks are recommended for float fishing the pier?

a few more experienced anglers turned up and fished the bottom inside the harbour.
the two kids beside us pulled up 4 fish within 10 mins, including two nice wrasse.
I don't know if the guys on top of the pier wall were catching or not.

I can think of worse ways of spending a sunday and at least the wife enjoyed herself too.

was that you that came up with the big tackle box and beachcasters casting off the top?
In the warm looking suit?
We were at the railings,me in black jacket,hat and shades with ugly stik.

after checking out your site I think it was you.

well,I've ordered more rag from t&t for fri if it comes in (fingers crossed) and will probably give the pier another bash this weekend.

cky,nice to see someone new to fishing enjoying themselves.
I usually drop to a size 2 aberdeen when float fishing.It is surprising the size of fish you can land with a smaller hook.Remember that a small hook will catch big and small fish while a big hook will only catch big fish.If the float is still going under after you change to a smaller hook try putting a smaller amount of bait on the hook.Sometimes if there is a large bait the fish will happily munch away without taking the hook.
