Wicklow Harbour 29.07.09

#1 Post by Dave »

People: Just myself

Duration:6:00 - 11:00ish

Tide:High at 6:00

Weather:Sunny with the odd shower

Bait:Rag and Mackerel

Rigs:3 hook Flapper and mini species rig in close

Results:whiting, codling, Ballan Wrasse, Tompot Blenny and a Polock of about 1lb or 1 1/2 lb

Report:

I managed to finish up work yesterday a little earlier than I expected so I decided to grab the gear and head out to Wicklow Harbour for some easy fishing. I didn't even bother checking the weather or the tides, just flung everything in the car and hit the road. I really needed a bit of easy fishing as I had been persisting with lure fishing for the last couple of weeks and had a few nightmare sessions and a string of blanks, at times having to resort to some slightly unorthodox tactics to avoid blanking. I managed to catch a few tiny Pollock, Whiting and Codling the other week by sticking some rag that someone had left behind on Bray harbour onto the spinner I was using and dropping down at the edge. Some of them weren't even much bigger than the spinner. I still can't leave the minis alone even when I only have my lure fishing gear with me.

Anyway back to Wicklow, when I arrived there was only one or two people fishing but as I started setting up I noticed that one of the lads down the end was into a nice fish, a nice Tub Gurnard as it turns out of a couple of pound. Needless after seeing that I couldn't set up quick enough, although all I could seem to get for my efforts were tiny pin whiting and codling. They did get slightly bigger as the evening progressed but that was all the big rod produced, everything else was caught in close with rag on my trusty little Ugly Stik. I was a little lazy with the photos this time and only took one of the Pollock that I got just before I left. Not a huge fish but he put a bit more of a bend in the little Ugly Stik than the little Blennies.

I thought that high tide was a bit later for some reason and that I'd have an hour or two to fish before high, unfortunately that wasn't quite how it worked out but tbh I was just happy not to blank again. You're absolutely right though, the fishing is noticeably slower on the drop but it would still take some effort to blank there.
