wicklow harbour 27-07-09

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me

Duration:3-9pm

Tide:last hr of the rise then falling

Weather:glorious, then pi##ing rain, then glorious then pi##ing rain

Bait:rag, mack

Rigs:2 hook flappers and mini rigs

Results:pollock, corkwing wrasse, ballan wrasse, tompot blenny, whiting, codling, goby

Report:Tried for smoothies last night at a Dublin mark with Fishface (I should have got sponsors for that walk   ). The mark was unfishable with strong southerlies and weed which blanketed the lines and rigs. We met Rustyhookthomas who also decided against fishing and gave us some lug, which saved my blank in Bray Harbour later with a whiting (thanks Thomas  ).I had some bait left over which gave me the excuse to go to Wicklow Harbour today  . Arrived to be met with glorious sunshine and got a pollock opn my first drop in close. This was followed by 2 other pollock and a wrasse and i was feeling quite chuffed after an hour as i had about 8 fish.

P1080110 (Medium).JPG
P1080111 (Medium).JPG

Some small kids arrived and i avoided eye contact in case they wanted to stay with me but i forgot i had a mack out for bait  . "Whats that fish called mister?, can we sit here with you and fish?". "No you cant ", i said "And stop asking questions  ". Well thats what i shouldve said   and half an hour later they left me in peace and moved on to another guy. I was getting no joy on the big rod with only whiting and small codling to 18cms to show. I was delighted to get a goby, another new species  , in close, followed by another few wrasse.

Then the heavens opened, i felt smug as i had wet gear and quickly put it on, but the smug feeling evaporated as the rain seeped into my jacket and down my back, at least it was warm tropical rain.Have to get decent light raingear  . It stopped after about 15 mins but an hour later the heavens opened again, worse this time, and i was drenched again. I tried to look cool as i had the raingear on , but when no one was looking, i took the jacket off(it was stuck to me), and put on my fleece   . A lad caught a nice plaice of 33cms, which was really fat and chunky.. I saw 3 macks being caught the whole time i was there. I lost count of the fish after 20 but it shows how much this mark produces that i thought the fishing was slow today  . You really cant blank in Wicklow Harbour, touch wood

Tried for smoothies last night at a Dublin mark with Fishface (I should have got sponsors for that walk
If its the mark I think it is then you probably walked too far  but yeh it wouldnt have been much fun anyway into that wind

Best fished on a big tide late evening 3 hours before hw.. I'll pm you with how many mtr's you gotta walk from where you park the car

Was down in wicklow harbour myself with cormdogg sunday evening, have to say the fishing was extremely slow, reckon I got maybe 25 fish in 4 hours (was hoping for a plaice for the species list but couldnt buy a flattie  managed 8 species though 8) ), the pier was rammed full though, thought I had taken a wrong turn and ended up at an E.U convention :(

Nice to see you got a new species though Dave, I'd say its a rock goby but I'm open to correction :!:

Thanks Mark, most of the flatties seem to come from the bottom end of the pier in the pic. As for the eu convention, maybe they were just pretending not to speak english to keep the kids away

I surrounded myself with banana skins to keep kids away

I only managed only 3 species myself and 20 different whiting each with its own particular personality.
Mark got a couple of decent wrasse and I hung on for a better one but didn't manage it.

Ill definitely give Wicklow another go, perhaps in darkness.
