a date with tony and his fella

#1 Post by boycie89 »

People: myself and tony fella

Duration:18 hours !!

Tide:in then out the in again !

Weather:grand

Bait:mack

Rigs:conger traces

Results:3 eels landed and one beast lost

Report:headed fishing with tony yesterday for a road trip and the only thing on my mind was food !! after a quick pitstop in abbeyleix we were on the road again got to the mark about 3 , set up the rods and in the water first in was me with a cracking fish i could not get off the bottom ! i just held the rod and watched as he peeled the line from my reel with ease ! he brought me under a ledge and that was that  , after this the wait began ! we waited and waited and waited for 5 long hours ! , tony however kept himself busy catching doggies and shore rockling whilst i sat at my rod like a statue and didnt move .
eventually my persistane paid off with a 20lb eel my first of 09 ! result :D after a few pics he was back in the water to fight another day . next up to the bat was tony in with his first ever conger and weighed in at 12lbs and he didnt stop there the very next cast he ws in again with a nice fish of 6 lbs all in all a great day out and cant wait to get back in the action

Well done lads, boycie forgive my ignorance as ive never fished for eels before . but did you wait for the eel to come out from under his ledge for five hours or did you lose that eel . I've had a few takes in Wicklow harbour that i thought might've been conger eels ,,,the fish dived for cover and i couldnt budge it then cut the line,,,should i have waited for him to come out??

hi dave , sometimes the conger will come out if you give him slack or if you apply gentle pressure for a while he might give but most people including myself havent got the patience to sit there for an hour holdong the rod :? so just pull for a break

if none of the above helps, I sometimes had success to free the eel giving him some "toothache" in tapping the butt end of the rod hard with the palm of my hand whilst keep the pressure on and then let the line go slack for a few seconds, keep repeating that for a few minutes, seems the vibrations in the line transferred to his head make him nervous or annoy him so much, that, after a while, he just gives up and lets go and you are the winner.
