Wicklow beach 16-03-09

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me, Al(Alanjordan), fishface, big mick

Duration:me;6-11pm

Tide:low 8'43pm

Weather:calm,mild,clear

Bait:lug,mack,squid,rag

Rigs:flappers,pulley rigs

Results:flounder,dab,codling,dogfish,whiting,5 bearded rockling

b]Report[/b]:We all arrived at different times and i arrived at 6pm to find Fishface and Al (Alanjordan) set up with 2 rods out and with a fish each under their belts. Al had caught a nice flounder and Neil had a doggie. It was nice to hear there were doggies around and i was hoping to land one or two  .I set up in the middle (a ploy by Neil to catch all my fish,,,which worked by the way :? ) , fishing 1 rod, and was soon reeling in stripped baits and untouched ones. Neil was fishing at distance on a pulley rig baited with mackeral and was pulling in doggies. He then caught a nice Dab. As usual ,he was giving us regular updates on the scores, and reminding me of how many i wasnt catching   .Al was getting plenty of bites and pulling in the odd whiting, but he was intent on getting a doggie and sent out a pulley rig baited with a chunk of mack. He was rewarded with a nice little codling  . Big Mick arrived and set up beside Al and was soon into a doggie. He had been quiet up to that but he let out a "whoop and yell ", that was like something from Custers last stand  . Now they really let me have it,,,,,,,"how many have you caught Dave?", said Mick,,,followed closely by Neil telling me how many he'd caught,,,,"just so as you wont get it wrong in the report".Big mick caught another doggie, a rockling and 2 whiting and i still hadnt a touch  ."Things can change very quickly Mick", i warned him as i caught a small whiting, blank saved . Neil was hanging on for his 10 th fish, he told me as he caught no 10 ,another doggie, 6 in all, followed by a double of whiting ,bringing his total to 12.Finally he left   , and all my fish that he was catching made their way towards my hooks. Finally i got a doggie ,followed by another and a 5 bearded rockling. In all it ended up

Eyesreilly 3x doggies, 1x 5 bearded rockling, and 3 x whiting.
Big Mick 2x doggies, 1x 5 bearded rockling, and 2 whiting
Fishface 6x doggies, 1x Dab, and 5 whiting
Al 1x flounder, 1x codling, rockling , cant remember how many whiting

Al left to go to Clogherhead to fish for congers till dawn so he'll update this report and confirm his catch, sorry for not getting it all right but i was being slagged and was under pressure to catch a fish(and remember who caught what!!!). Al has more pics which i'm sure he'll post if he ever gets home from his fishing expedition
.p.s. i tried frozen lug and wasnt impressed. Caught doggies on mack, Doggies were at distance but came closer as the tide turned , which is how i was able to get them . Neil had advised me to use my 15 foot rod as there are times when distance is needed and it would get me better distance than my 12 and a half foot one but i hadnt listened,,,,,i'll bring it next time

just getting sorted form the trip now lads   only got home at 5pm this evening. after i left you all at 11pm i headed up to port oriel clogherhead. my mate was a no show so i just fished it on my own. the conger gear was untouched all night, but i did get 2 nice wee codling and my biggest ever short spined sea scorpion 8) i thought it was a deformed codling when he first broke the surface due to his big bucket bake  there were no bites after 5am so by 8.30am it was low tide again so i packed up and headed on round to the beach and set up there to fish the incomming tide in the hope of a daytime flattie. but alas, it was'nt ment to be    by 2pm the coffee and half dozen cans of red bull had wore off and the side effects of a 29 hour fishing trip started to take hold. so it was off to the garage for some more red bull and a cuppa coffee before heading for home again. i really enjoyed myself with the craic and banter on the beach and fair play to fishface for putting us onto the fish    that man can really chuck a lead    . i'm would'nt be suprised if some of his casts were'nt picked up by the radar in dublin airport. well impressed 8) just a pity i was the only one not to get into the doggies on the beach, but it gives me something to aim for next time      but at least the codling had taken a liking to my lugworm at both marks

Looking at Al's dab there makes me really think the flattie you got on the rocks was a flounder

It is great to see the doggies back. Nice session lads. And Al your some man I tell ya that was a session and a half.

I think Mick was catching your doggies Al before they could get to your hooks,,,same way Fishface was beating me to them. They seem to be making an appearance now at least. Glad to hear you had a result in Clogherhead, thats some scorpion fish  . You certainly make my 6 or 7 hour trips seem like flying visits

lol!!   cheers lads, it was a good trip that i really enjoyed, but i was wrecked by the end :| :| :| when i got home i never even bothered to unpack the car, just went straight to my bed to examine the back of me eyelids    the s.s. sea scorpion was the hidhlight of the trip, they don't grow as big as the long spined sea scorpions. so he beat my p.b. by 10cms     and the codling seemed quite partial to the juicy lug i brought down with me  i can't wait to do it all over again as i had a brill time with good company. i just gotta get me a bar of silver on the next outing
