Galway Bay SAC Club Outting, Killary, Galway 18.01.09

#1 Post by saltydog »

People: Nige, Papa Smurf, Corbyeire, Vinnycorrigan, stevecrow74, Handbrake Hynes, Darius and myself

Duration:13:00-20:00 (some left at different stages)

Tide: HT @ 22:50

Weather: Gale force winds, hailstones, with some sunny spells

Bait: mackerel, herring, squid, sandeel, lug, whiting

Rigs: various

Results: Nige 2 thornies to 4lb 1 dog, Papa Smurf 1 whiting, Corbyeire 1 Thornie 1 dog, Vinnycorrigan 5 dogs, stevecrow74 1 thornie just shy of 6lb 2 dogs, Handbrake Hynes 2 Thornies 3 dogs 1 whiting, Darius 3 Thornies to 11lb 1 dog 1 whiting 1 pouting, myself 5 ray to 8lb 6 dogs

Report: First Galway Bay SAC outting of the year and 8 hardy (or slighty mad) anglers. Converged on Killary more in hope than expectation with a swell running and surf the likes i've never seen hitting Glassilaun beach, things didn't look promising. Arrived to find the lads all set up with corbyeire already with a ray to his name and Darius are newsest member (who the Bray Outcast lads will Know) off the mark with a dog. The fishing was tough enough to begin with but picked up as the day went on I was in with a double shot of ray on the first cast and Darius was picking of fish nicely throughout including the best fish of the day an 11lb Thornie which he caught on his spinning gear put a hell of a bend in the rod!! Handbrake Hynes was keeping the fish coming and picked off a nice ray and a cracking whiting. Steve and Vinny were finding it tough but pulled it out of the bag towards the end vinny getting a run of dogs in quick succession while steve pulled out a nice ray on the last cast. Nige also got a fine double of Thornies on the last cast. While Papa Smurf got a whiting but unfortunately couldn't connect with anything else the fishing gods weren't smiling on him. I was catching fairly regularly and broke by PB on Thornies 3 times today with 6.5lb 7lb and an 8lber previous best being a 6lber. All in all it turned out to be a good days fishing given the conditions and time of year. The fishing really came on towards the end but another storm was brewing and we called it a day. If i've left out any fish etc the lads can fill in....

It was a better end for me after spending the first half of the session losing tackle..

I pulled in a sixth doggie on handbrakes lost rig.

Great start to the year lads. Fair play to ye for venturing out - conditions were brutal.
I can only imagine the craic with that 11lb-er on spinning gear :)

Couldn't make it out to this session (was a bit under the weather  ), but looking forward to the next one
