hi all
work has me in limerick for the week next week ,i am bringing the rods and plan to sneak away to the shannon for a couple of sessions .

could anyone tell me of a good mark to try and someplace to source fresh bait
all advice and help needed

Hi iano,

You should check out Kilteery Pier just outside of foynes great spot for thornies. Check out posts by "Donagh" and "Gearoid Mc S" they have a great amount of knowlege about the shannon Estuary and they are not averse to giving a bit of advice and pointing you in the right direction.

Sorry I can not help as I havent been fishing much due to a new baby. Check the marks section on this website, shannon regional fisheries board and the map of the Estuary on the cfb site. A good general rule is most shoreline marks fish best around low water (not kilteery pier though) but this just a starting point and very much a generalisation. I use large fish baits wrapped in squid to conteract crabs and you cant go to far wrong with a pulley rig though I vary rigs on cleaner ground. Some marks around Limerick can be fairly snaggy so on these I use 20lb line with a 100% shock leader on a 525 with a rod decent mixed ground rod when I say mixed ground rod I mean something a good deal stiffer than some rods marketed as such.

donagh pretty much summed it up there use the shore marks section to locate the marks..ignore the info that goes with it though its all a load of b*llox..and mack and squid on clipped down rigs with hooks in the 2/0- 4/0 range....animal rod and reel aswel..for me i use these rods not so much for the fish or ground but to hold in what can be fierce tides and not to collapse when casting 6oz and a fillet of mackerel...
have used a few so called rough ground rods only for this to happen b4...
