Report:Today was a bloody nightmare,we spent most of it driving to different venues trying to find mullet.We started at Holywood then Millisle then over to Strangford Lough to check out a few places.The 1st mullet we saw was near Whiterock and some of them were taking bread but not the piece with the hook in it
Things were looking grim by 6pm and we headed to our usual spot to see if there was much happening over there.I had a small mullet of 2.4lb there yesterday so we were hopeful of at least seeing some fish,but when we arrived the tide seemed to be an hour ahead of its time so we had missed the best fishing.
I was for going home(in a bad mood) but Colin convinced me to go for a look at another spot nearby so we got geared up and went for a long walk.Its not often Colin has a good idea but this one definately was
We finally reached mark 5 and were greeted by the sight of no fish I would usually turn around and head back to the car but we spotted something moving in the distance and Colin suggested we head over for a better look,so off we went for another quarter mile walk wearing soaking wet waders.
There was only 1 foot of water but we saw decent numbers of mullet moving around and threw them some free bread which they gulped down as it hit the water.I moved 100yards down from Colin to another group of fish and they also took the free bread.I missed a bite after only a few casts by which time Colin had changed to the fly rod,but i stuck it out with bait.
By now it had started to pour down and we couldn`t see our bread or flies,and we had both left our coats in the car so we were soaked to the skin.We`d been standing in the pouring rain for about 40 mins when i had another bite,this time my float shot off and i struck in to a heavy fish which put up a great fight in the shallow water and took several good runs out towards deeper water.I finally got it beat and lifted it out of the water with my hand(i`d left my net just out of reach)
It was as fat as a barrel and i knew it would be knocking the door of the magical 5lb specimen mark.When i weighed it the scales stopped at 5.1lb happy days specimen mullet number 3 for this year.I took all the photos i needed to claim it then sent it on its way.
Colin was still fishing and i went over to feed the fish to keep them in the area but the rain was bouncing and we couldn`t see if they were feeding or even see his fly so after another 20 mins we called it a day and the mullet had moved well offshore anyway.
By the time we had walked the 2 miles back to the car the wind had dropped an the rain had passed Hopefully the weather will be kinder tomorrow so we can give this mark another go.

cheers.yes ronald it was def a typical mullet for there.i got it into 6 inches of water and its back was out of the water while its belly was stuck in the mud

Went out to the mark this morning again but couldnt get the mullet to feed.it must have something to do with Davys smell cause they only seem to feed when he is there

what smell? i dont smell!!! or maybe im just used to it
you`re fly csating into the wind was dead on,better than i could do.thats why i left the fly rod in the car

roll on 6pm so i can head over again.maybe they only feed on the later tides hope the rain stays away but i might give it a go even if it doesn`t but i`ll bring my coat this time.still drying out after last nite.

it was interesting to see them still feeding in the pouring rain,i`ve never had any luck when its raining so it could def be worth a go.

days like that happen all too often when mullet fishing,usually with no fish at the last minute to keep spirits up
i`ve had it lucky this year with the mullet,most sessions only last for 1-2hrs and sometimes there are no fish around so i just head straight home.
not sure how many sessions i`ve done but 21 mullet and counting.im dying to break the 6lb mark,just missed it last year by half an ounce still got about 2 months to do it so i`ve got a chance.

im dead chuffed to get the maximum of 3 specimen mullet this year,i never thought i`d do it but then again i`ve only fished for mullet
i`ll keep trying for more until the season ends in october,hopefully get a hook into a 6lb`er,or two
