2 day mini species hunt bangor 18, 19th june

Duration: 5pm - 9pm each evening

Tide: low to rising

Weather: sunny with monsoon showers

Bait: rag

Rigs: size 10 barbless carp hooks on 2 lb line

Results: me, 6 shanny's, 1 goldsinny wrasse, 4 short spined sea scorpions, 1 long spined sea scorpion and 1 shore rockling. jordan 1 tompot blenny, 5 short spined sea scorpions, 2 long sipned sea scorpions, 4 shannys, 1 goldsinny wrasse, 1 shore rockling and a mackeral




Report: we decided to boost the 08 species count by targeting the mini species at bangor in the gaps between the rocks. we were fishing in about a foot of water hopeing to lure them out with the promise of a pea sized chunk of rag on a wee size 10 barbless carp hook and we wer'nt dissapointed. we both caught stuff we never had before. i got my first goldsinny wrasse and shanny and jordan got his first tompot blenny, goldsinny wrasse, shanny, both long and short spine sea scorpions and a mackeral caught on a trace he found wrapped in weed earlier in the session (jammy dog). none of this would have been possible if it were'nt for ronald showing me where to fish the last time we were out. so a big thank you ronald from me and the wee man and i learnt a new lesson about mini species. be careful with the shannys, they might look cute but they have a mouth full of needle sharp teeth and a powerfull jaw to match . one about 8 inches long clamped onto the gap of flesh between my thumb and finger and drew blood all in all 2 cracker wee sessions. well chuffed

yeah, down the holes where the grates are missing. we lost at least 20 to 25 fish that slipped off the hook, but i did'nt use barbed hooks so as not to harm the wee critters, some of these wee guys have soft mouths and a barbed hook would have done unecessary harm

there are lots more we did'nt catch but saw including butterfish(gunnel) rockcook wrasse, different blennies and goby's. i'm sure they're waiting for us on our next trip . nice pic's shamoo, check our gallery out in profile section. most of them taken at donaghadee. that wee mark has been really good to us, just a pity it's been a bit over-run at the moment, but then all the piers are at the moment seeing as it's mack season

Sounds like you had a good enough species hunt Al , and well done to the wee man ,I'm suprised you didn't get any ballan wrasse ,there's normally loads of them in the back of the pier .
I know what you mean about monsoon and sun shine ,I was standing waist deep in strangford lough fishing for mullet in one of the " showers " yesterday

i know, i seem to be playing catch up lately . and ronald ,we were near waist deep in water too. odd thing was, we were on dry land . how did the mullet hunt go??? were gonna try a location we watched mullet at over 2 years. in the 2 years we watched them we never saw any one fish for them, and some of them were easily 2 to 3 foot long. and i would say that was a conservative estimate . getting excited just thinking about it

it's great mc, we're both fish on the brain when we're not fishing we're planning fishing or wandering the shores collecting bait for our next trip we're planning the summer out at the minute, and provided i can save the cash by july we're gonna fish the east coast from rathlin island to waterford over a 2 week peorid meeting up with some of the guys from the forum along the way. can't wait . roll on july

well done - love reading the posts and can't wait to hear how your trip from Rathlin to Waterford goes.

Fished the Dee pier a few weeks back with a couple of mates just to wet a line and use up some left over rag. Caught a few pollock, coalies and some wrasse. Handy enough on light gear but wasn't long before a crowd gathered and started making a nuisance of themselves - crack-offs, tangled lines etc. Fortunately we were able to stay out of the road and watch the fun from a distance - plonkers

Maybe see you around sometime but keep up the good work - quailty time with the kids is priceless even better when they get the same kick out of something that you like doing.

hi steviec, glad to hear you've been reading our reports and enjoyed them. i never realised how many people log on the site until we turn up at marks or go into tackle shops and people start to talk to jordan by name saying how well we have been doing from reading our reports the wee man has become quite the minor celebrity we're only in the door from another session at bangor. we were ment to go out on the boat but the weather was a bit mental so we consolled ourselves with 4 hours of mini species mania . the tide was up so we fished the old harbour with a total of 44 shannys between us, result or what the full wet weather gear might make me look like lollypop man but it does the trick and keeps me dry. will keep an eye out for you in the future. we won't be hard to miss

Myself and the wee fella had stopped of at T&T for a chat with Mr H. We saw the fluorescent yellow suit so stopped for a look. My wee fella commented that you were doing what he does, ie. fishing straight down the wall directly below your feet.

great stuff lads, im going to give the pier a bash later in the week and try and get a few more species to my name!do the mini species take anything asides the ragworm because i dont think trap and tackle will have any?alandjordan do you have a boat in the marina or were you going to head out on the charter?

yeah nobuzz, guilty as charged. that was us holding on for dear life trying not to get blown into the tide. when the weather is bad fishing at your feet is the only realistic option and christina hi, we were suposed to be going out with brian on the blue aquaris but it would have been like a remake of the perfect storm complete with the same ending if we tried. so mission aborted but then again, we got 44 fish between us in 4 hours or so. so i really can't complain . it will be another year or so before i get my own boat so it's charter all the way at the moment we'll be back down again on thursday from 4pm until dark with loads of rag, so if your about give us a shout and we'll show you a few good spots and hopefully boost your species count a bit. we have tried squid, lug, mack,limpets, mussles and cockles, but rag is best closely followed by cooked peeled prawns which we buy from asda for only 83p a packet here are a few pics from today
