Hi guys, one of those green horn questions however, I received my new first VHF hand held radio and got a couple of questions that aren't answered in the manual:
1.) What actually is squelch
2.) Do you have to register your VHF, is so where??

Normally you turn it up until the radio squawks and then turn back a little.
I reckon you cannot register a marine VHF as an independent unit; you must register the vessel and then you will be given a "call sign". To get a "ships radio licence" and a "call sign" you must have a VHF operators licence. To get this you will have to do a course.
Most people use away without ever getting any licence. You are technically breaking the law using a VHF without.
Normally you turn it up until the radio squawks and then turn back a little.
