People: Me.

Duration: 3 hours (11.00-14.00)

Tide: HW around 12.30-ish (I think :? ).

Weather: Glorious.

Bait: Frozen mack, lug, sandeel, squid.

Rigs: up & over, pulley/pennel, 2-hook flapper

Results: 1 doggie, 1 turbot.




Report:
Arrived to find the beach to myself. No swimmers, divers, surfers, etc. :D . Fished the smaller beach, to the right of the mobile homes/car park. Setup at the end of the beach where there was a small bit of surf running - thinking flatties. Lobbed out a 2-hook flapper with lug/squid & lug/mack. Fished a pulley out further with sandeel/mack. Got an early take on the pulley and reeled to find a nice little turbot (~27cm).

A little while later another take on the distance rod - a doggie. Meanwhile a few swimmers started arriving. Thankfully, they kept their distance :D.

Varied the baits and range on the 'flapper rod' but this wasn't producing any results. The crabs were stripping the baits as quickly as they were hitting the water. They weren't content just to take the bait - feckers had to take one of my hooks as well :evil: .

So between changing baits, all I had to do was sit back and soak up the teriffic sunshine 8) 8) . (Must remember to take off the shades for a while next time I'm out in the sun :roll: . Let's just say that one look at me and it's easy to tell what shape lenses I had on today :twisted: ).

Would love to have stayed longer but had to haul ass back to Galway :( . A few hours on a fantastic beach on a fantastic day is always welcome (plus a couple of fish as a bonus) :lol: .

Nothing to worry about. Could see a few small clumps floating around but didn't interfere with my lines in any way. The clump that messed with one of my lines was a 2-legged one walking on the beach :roll:

By the way, did you ever fish the longer beach? If so, how would you rate it?

yeah.. the country seems to be full of them clumps.

as for the long beach.. thats where most of Galway bay sea angling club competitions are held, a good day will produce good ray, doggies and huss :wink:

yep and on a bad day this mark will produce weed weed weed and sunburn :lol:

Fished the main beach on Sunday in a comp. Wasn't great fishing, I had one ray and a dog, winner I think had 2 ray 2 dogs and a flounder. Lots of weed on the lower pegs but high pegs weren't troubled by it. Couple of excellent flounder taken as well, really big fat fish. Not too much bother with crabs though. You should have walked the extra few yards! :)
Its called fishing, not catching. If it was called catching it wouldn't be fishing!

chap to my left had a ray and a dog - fella to the right had 3 dogs and a ray

so did anyone else blank on the day - eveyone seemed to get a fish or two

i would have said that was an average fishing session for that beach cause comps there usually produce single figures for the field when its in daylight...

other point i would like to ask is a chap 2 pegs down kept a ray - now ordinarly i couldnt care but on reading the IFSA handbook it states that comps are based on catch and release?

You can keep a fish, but IFSA competitions should no longer be based on a weigh in at the end.

The competitions are based on length, but once you've measured the fish you can keep it as long as its legal to do so.
Think you might have been the only blank! :P
