Duration:17.45-20.45
Tide: Ebb
Weather:Fine, sunny, slight breeze
Bait: Rag, lures
Rigs: Float
Results: 3 Ballan Wrasse, 1 Pollock
Report: Had asked Corbyeire if he fancied a session, but he was too sunburned
Arrived and made my way down to the mark, plenty of swimmers around, so I made my way to the left, a bit of climbing, and I was well out of the swimmers way.
I had not fished here before, so it was going to be a bit of trial and error, but it looked a great spot for wrasse and pollock.
Set up a float rig, baited with rag, around 10' deep and cast out, then started with the spinning.
I had started out with a jelly sandeel, and had been spinning for around 30 mins without a touch. I knew I was fishing deep enough because I was getting the odd snag on the weed.
I noticed my float go under, struck, felt a pull of a fish, he took a bit of line, then stuck. Must have been a good size wrasse I though, but I couldnt get him out of his hole. Pulled it free and lost the hook length(must have been a bad knot
Put the float back out to where I had lost the fish, and changed the jelly to a german sprat, 15 mins more spinning and still nothing
It looked ideal ground for pollock and I couldnt understand why I hadnt got anything, then bang, the float disappeared again and didnt pop up, I managed to give a good strike, felt the fish dive for cover, and same as before, he had wedged himself into a crack or hole or something because he was stuck tight. I gave him some slack line, and wandered 50/60 yards to my left. Put some tension back in the line, and started to tug him free, thank god, I managed to get him out of his hole, he gave a good account of himself when I got him free, he was still diving for cover, but I managed to land him safely. My biggest wrasse so far, 41cm, around 4lb I would guess by his weight ( I must get some scales
Didnt bother spinning again, I wanted to concentrate on the float as I had started to get more bites.
Caught a couple more wrasse, and 1 pollock (on the float), so not a terrible result for a new mark for 3 hours fishing.
I missed 10+ bites, and lost 4 fish, 2 of which were a very good size.
I'll definately return to this mark
Pollock was deep hook, so kept him for dinner, wrasse went back safely, obviously
I would just say regarding the swimmers.....most were very considerate, and either swam well out from where I was fishing, or swam well to my right, however there was one stupid old bag, who decided for whatever reason to swim straight infront of me, around 10 yards out
I'll make sure I've plenty of old rotten mack, next time
