535gs/mag Vs. Slosh 30

which is perceived to be better? from reading old posts i get the impression both can be a little tricky to cast as you would expect from such heavy spools but which is better for hauling....im talking 20lb's conger over kelp jungles here...

I was thinking also the new sha 30 but ive heard its not quite as bombproff as the slosh plus the price

Btw i have a ron T axe in mind for the combo....ive cast one b4....a tree trunk with rings...exactly what im loking for!!!

dont know about the 535 but the slosh30 added to a thick rod means you need big hands to hold them

i'd be a slosh man myself, use the sl30 and a conoflex nemesis plus slr or enigma for all my rough ground fishing and find them faultless, have never tried the 535, but find the 525 undergunned for this kind of fishing.

had a 525gs and sold it on knew it wouldnt be up to the job....the 525mags have brass gears so they are definately out...

surely here is someone out there who has tried both??

I used to use the 535GS for uptiding, took tope to 40+lb effortlessly. I'd imagine it would haul in a snotty ok for you. Never used the other reel, mind.

i would not recommend the slosh 30

good reel to start but when you have 2 that are less than two years old and looked after.
i have various multipliers that are older than these looked after the same and not an ounce of bother with them.
bad quality parts in these reels.
and the both of them need there bearings replaced bought in the one shop in Dublin for 118 euro each not worth a f@@k. these reels had made in Taiwan stamped in the seat of them steer clear.
go for the Penn.

does any one know where to get slosh bearings

locally.

john try ebay,,,
no idea what happened to yours cause mine is in great nic over 4 years old have had pleanty of tope on it to ,been on the boat for 1 0f em with no looking after at all and is perfect,,,
also have an sl20 paul brierly gave me 10 years ago it just gave in there recently with years and years of abuse,,, id def go for the slosh unless you can get your hands on an old shimano speed master , that be worth bringing to the table

i have the slosh 30 and find it a great reel but ive also had the 525 and loved that reel as well

IMHO depends on the type of fishing you intend to do with them. I have both, the slosh x are great for long range 30lb line hauling, including big conger, they cast brilliantly if a little lively. the penn feels a bulkier reel, but the mags make it ideal if your casts will vary from under your feet to somewhere out in the tide. i prefer to use my slosh X's, but the penn is used for serious close in skull dragging. hope that helps.

yes Dennis the shimanos are a different breed of reel i actually have a pair of old (speed masters) and a tld5 they are bomb proof totally used and abused and still going as good as the day they were got 20+ years ago.
i have had plenty of tope on the sloshes as well.

might just be a bad batch of reels this particular shop got i did bring one back to him last year with no joy

second one only packed up 2 weeks ago

have to get a tld myself,,, im in the process of rooting out my old speed master as i seem to be the only Idiot who cant cast a 525 mag with 20lb main line

i have my slosh30 two years and its good as new, my slosh20 is newish and the 525 is 3years old also great nick, but for conger bashing i use the 30 off serious rough ground, cant comment on the 535, but comparing the 525 and sl20, the 525 casts better and does medium ground, but the 20 is stronger and has better pulling power, in other worls the drag has never slipped on any slosh i have but does on the 525 at times

Fitted some of those smoothie drag washers to my slosh 20 & 30 the other day, they are fantastic, really good value off ebay, had got the wrong grease on the old washers and it became a bit snatchy, even better than new now

I have a 535 and two SL30s for fishing kelp in NE England. Fell out of favour with the 535 as it's just not as smooth and is much bigger on the rod when your hands aren't the size of shovels. That said I have kept the 535 for when I know i'll be hauling through very heavy kelp or winching a bit up a rock face with a heavy rod suck as MK1 Apollo.

As you say you're targetting larger conger through heavy kelp I'd say 535; much stronger gearing. SL30 much better if you want a smoother casting reel for that extra few yards. I use mine however lobbing with 40lb straight through. Get through a few bearings with the Sloshes but only about £7 to replace. SL20s my most used reels.

In summary for what you want I'd go 535.

sounds good ill never need to be casting more than 80 yards where i plan to fish.....coz i wont get it back...one of the few marks in the estuary where the main channel is within casting distance...was one of the considered spots for the new gas terminal that is being built in north kerry...60ft of water at 80 yards...
