Arklow south beach, 18th april

Tide:high, i think, didnt drop much!!

Weather:north easterly breeze early on, slackening later.

Bait:lug, rag, mack, squid

Rigs:flappers, long flowing traces

Results:Dabs, whiting, doggies, dabs and more dabs.




Report:My first visit to Arklow south beach provided me with an opportunity to try out my shelter for the first time. Didnt really need it though as the wind died down. I was glad that I didnt leave it on view in the car though!!!,,,i'll explain later. John Bunn was already set up when we arrived and was reeling in dabs like nobodys business. He had one when we arrived and by the time I got the shelter and rod set up he was on number 8 . Blink and you'll miss them. This beach seems to be littered with them but on this session I was finding it hard to connect with anything . Neil was shouting down telling me each time he caught another doggie and asking me how many i had caught . The relief I felt when a small dab appeared was immense . In all i caught 2 dabs, 2 dogs and 2 whiting. John Bunn took the honours this time with 21 fish, with Neil not far behind. Neil was using a long flowing trace to target dogs, and it certainly did the trick. The carpark here seems to be used by boy racers and throughout the night we could hear the roar of engines and the skidding of tyres . We were all thinking of our cars , which though near were out of view and we decided to head home at 11pm. Our fears were proven right when we arrived back at the carpark and Neils wheel trims were stolen . Mine were also gone but had been gone for the last year ( lucky I asked for an Ian golds backpack instead of wheeltrims for my birthday ). This incident put a downer on the night and I dont think we'll be going back there, well not at night anyways. I suppose that this could happen anywhere and it could have been a lot worse but thats no consolation for Neil who'll have to shell out for new ones.

ps had to take pics on my phone as i forgot my camera (THOUGHT I DID IT WAS IN MY BACKPACK ALL THE TIME )

pretty sad about the car been messed with.......how are you supposed to enjoy your fishing when youre worrying about some scumbag vandalising your car!!

nice fishing eyes, pity about the scumbags. must have been hard to concentrate on the fishing while worrying about your motors. one wrong flick of the handbreak from these inexperienced kids who think they're colin mc crea ends up with the side of your motor being scrubbed out

What size hooks were you using?
Now that it is the bass closed season I will have to scale down my hook sizes and target other species - I have yet to catch a dab - I guess you use a fairly small hook size for them?

Leaving the car in a remote car park late at night is always a worry - especially when you see cars coming and going - have these guys nothing better to do than tear up and down country roads, speed into car-parks and zoom off again?

fished there quiet alot earlier this year. but gave it up because of the boyracers not fun sitting waiting to hear you car alarm going off

I use size 2 hooks Rockhunter,,,,, by the way they also caught a bass for me some weeks ago (sorry Neil ) so as John 1 and Harry told me earlier in the year ,,,small hooks will catch big and small fish,,, large hooks will only catch large fish. My catch rate improved straight away with the smaller hooks

something gonna have to be done about the boyracers on this mark wonder where the cops are at night couple of road spikes might sort them out, 4 flat tyres would soon put an end to the chaos, good mark ,shame about the worry of ur car being wrecked , well done on the fishing lads, and sorry to hear about your car neil

thanks to one and all, wont bother to fish there again, pity really, as it is a good beach, throws up the odd ray and spurs and smoothies when it is calm. i was lucky there was not any damage done to the car once again thanks for the kind words

I'm only sorry that it happened while you were helping another angler (me ) find a new mark . However I believe that what goes round comes round and hopefully you (and them ) will get their reward sometime .
