liscannor/lahinch, Co Clare, 15/3/08

People:myself and corbyeire

Duration: 6hours(ish)

Tide:falling in liscannor and rising in lahinch

Weather: 7 seasons

Bait:frozen lug mack sandeel squid

Rigs:various

Results:

one minor heart attack and 2 flounder


Report:
fished the pier at liscannor for a few hours, feeding the crabs.. untill all of a sudden the ratchet on my mag 525 screeeeemed :shock: :shock:
giving me a minor heart attack.. then all of a sudden i heared tweet tweet of a [url=http://www.neseabirds.com/graphics/Razorbillobrien1.JPG]razorbill[/url]

excitement over and back to feeding the crabs :oops: ..

low tide came and time to move further down the road.. set up on the beach but nothing was happening for ages, until i reeled in and noticed something funny attached to a hook... twas a flounder ( a counter too 20cm)
didnt see any bite and didnt feel it come in..
that saved my blank...
later i noticed the profile twitch.. happy days as i brought in another flounder 22cm.. all was going well for me.. until the water found the hole in the side of my wellies :oops: started to pack up around 20:30 and watched corby continue for a few mins to save himself of a dreaded blank... oh well.... better luck tomorrow :wink:

off to the local chippy for chips salmonella sauce and cheese.. reminded us of a chippy we knew years ago :shock:

too bad corbyeire, sorry to hear about the blank, steve wont let you forget either, cant wait until i am able to go fishing again, some nice flounder steve considering the weather, any photos or is the phone broke? as for the chip shop i am sure teacher knows where it is :twisted:

phone is ok.. i dont take it out when its p!ssin rain the whole time,

Hi Steve

the new pier at Liscannor is a waste of time as the ground is almost sterile and quite shallow even at HW. Better to fish from the other side into the foul ground where allowing for tackle losses you will pick up wrasse, pollack, macks in summer, dogs, congers and the occassional huss...

There is a good mark further up the coast called Cloghans, a nice beach and a good rock mark that is popular with swimmers in the summer.

Were you fishing the estuary or did you fish the beach proper in Lahinch?

Never had much luck off the pier there either, except for a few of the largish mullet that cruise around there in the summer although I'm not a great fan of fishing for those frustrating feckers.

I've tried a lot of baits and rigs off that pier and only ever picked up a small wrasse for my trouble.

Despite appearances i'm now convinced that fishing from the end of the prom is the best spot in lahinch, had more fish from here that any other part of the bay in the last 10 years.

Kieran, never seen anyone fishing the rocks behind the pier besides myself, tell me more about this huss ...... ?

is there a beach in Claghane (sp?) thought that was a pure rock mark?

what can i say another blank to my bow!

steve how is the back/neck/knees? :lol:

i noticed you were holding onto the dashboard for dear life as we drove on the "roads" from lahinch to lisdonvarna

road works and thick fog didnt help - not to mind some crazy music - say it didnt do the indegestion much help

funniest had to be all the poor souls slowing down for the "garda" checkpoint where we had parked on the way out from lahinch to liscannor

myself and steve a most likely pair of guards!!! :lol:

yeah its amazing the amount of cars that slowed down, but after all it was dark, i did have my reflective floatie on and headlight was on full beam..


as for the back knee and shoulder.. they were grand until last night :shock:
seat full up to the front and a piano over the back of the seat... might be a while before i walk upright again :shock: :shock:

Agree with you about the prom although at the church end where the rocks merge with the sand can be very productive as well near HW...

Rocks are awful, a lost lead a throw but if you know before you go, then you can hit some decent fish. Huss was not big taken at night on squid legered about 40 yards out into the worst stuff (hoping for a red cod!)...

Never fish the liscannor side of the estuary, rubbish mark. Fish from the golf course side, waders required, survey at low water, good for plaice in amongst the flounder and channel used to have loads of bass...

might still be one knocking about, chance of a salmon and sea trout too so make sure you have the licence.

that's where i normally head to these day, either off the last set of steps on the prom (liscannor) side, or wander 200 yards down towards the river if conditions are ok.

Kieran, I've tried to fish below the church too on occassion, very rough out there, keep meaning to try it with a popper some fine summers night.

There are still a few bass around there, with lug outperforming everything else.


Corby, that spit, is that a long walk out, with chance of a bull? Think I was talking to you about it before, must get back up there again some day.

the spit was the one with the bass and mullet that wont hook up! or so you told me :lol:

the huss would be in the deeper water off the point if they were there - place was a lot shallower than i expected when i saw it at low tide

it really is rough ground until you get to the end of the spit on both sides

the walk to the tip would be around 30mins - maybe more depending on gear

i take it your fishing in lahinch is at darkness then when the surfers are gone on that side of the prom

that's the one! I know the walk well, spent 3 hours out on the point there feeding crabs one fine july day, got fed up eventually so headed back to the car with my two rods, gear bag and bucket, only to discover i'd left my fecking car keys back at the point :oops:

I'll be back in clare mid april so may get a chance to fish it again.

and

yeah, always fished Lahinch in darkness due to the surfers, although there is a lad who always fishes / swff in the river mouth area in daylight during the summer, never seen him catch anything though.
