Report: OK I know its in the wrong section but thought more people are going to see it.

Next weekend I will be in the Doolin-Kinvara area - supposed to be a Valentine weekend but as I will be close to the coast it seems a shame not to wet a line or two (if I am let!!)

I have never fished in that area and would be very grateful if somebody could give me some advice on a few good marks - it will probably be daylight fishing - I might be pushing it if I head off for a late night fishing session. In fact I might be going back to Cork on my own if I tried that

What is the pier at Doolin like for daytime fishing?

if its daylight fishing stick to blackhead or ballyreen and the deep water should treat you right - provided there isint a huge westerly or swell

Hi

Doolin harbour at high water is not that bad a spot nor is the beach if there is a bit of surf - extreme currents, do not wade - it should be very calm by the weekend, good weather forecast in which case you might want to look at an evening session heading into darkness.

A big mackerel head in the surf might get you a bass but they are very rare here ahead of April or May at the earliest. at ballyreen and ardkeen you can cast off the rocks into deep water over sand for rays if you are lucky, dog and huss if you are not, and on a smaller scale, and given the likely weather and tides, flatfish with flounder to the fore. By the way how does peeler crab do around there? I have a bunch of fresh peelers left over from last weekend.

Use them in the surf at Lahinch near the rocks on the RHS facing out to sea at dusk or dawn ahead of the surfers for a better chance of a bass...
I am sure the local fish around Ballyreen will delight in finding them!

I tried Black Head on Saturday - first fished from the rocks just below the lighthouse but ran into problems with bad ground and lost a few rigs. So packed up and headed to the tackle shop in Fanore for some floats.
Picked up four plus a new stock of leads (they have a great stock of leads there - saying something about the amount of tackle lost from the cliffs??).

I then tried a different spot on Black Head to the west of the lighthouse. Looked to be deep water, tried for a while with the floats, but nothing biting at all. Then tired a bit more bottom fishing but lost the rig again

Maybe all the fish have died from lead poisoning - I certainly left enough of mine there.

Well at least I got some fresh air and it was a nice calm sunny day.

On the Sunday I had a look at Ballyreen - at least I think it was Ballyreen (it looks like somebody remove all the signs for fishing marks between there and Black Head - metal posts were there but the signs were removed/broken off - damn anti-fishing tree huggers??). There were 4 or 5 Polish (?) guys fishing there but they had caught nothing - and as quite a bitter NE/E wind had picked up, and herself was not too keen, I decided to have a pub lunch instead to keep the peace before returning home to Cork - as it was supposed to be a Valentine weekend rather than a serious fishing trip.
