Results: 1 small pollack, 1 garfish, 1 bass

Hello to everybody, this is my 1st post... I'm italian, moved to Ireland 7 months ago and started liking this sport straight away...blanked millions of times but the locations you have here are so stunning that you can always enjoy the same!
This morning weather was good with just a little breeze but sea was kind of running the same, anyway it was a pleasure being out there.

Got the pollack and the garfish on the first 2 casts using frozen sandeels as bait on a floater (roughly 1 meter below water level), than nothing for half an hour and then my 1st bass on a lure came! Got it spinning a rubber sandeel on a jighead, I was delighted...

! It was about 40 cm (I just compared with my feet), put it back in the water slowly and then it swam away...now, I've been quite careful and it seems he survived but I didn't feel very confident in handling the fish, is this just a lack of experience or does anybody have any particular suggestion about? I find difficult especially keeping the fish still.

After that I tried with some peeler crabs and got two eaten but I wasn't able to recognize the bites because of the waves, then it was time to leave...for a change not expecting to be mocked by girlfriend!

Good catch you had and I really hope you enyoid your day.
I'm belgian, living in ballincollig for many years and try to fish at least twice a week.
ery interesting yoy fished with a float, I never did it however I heard good catches from other people... time to try>
Where did you fish exactly? because cork harbour is big..... If yoy like, you always can send me a PM.
I go one of these days to sandycove, see report of a couple of days ago

Hi Xavier, just sent you a PM.
Like float fishing cause it allows you to present the bait nearly anywhere near rocks and also to try something else at the same time, like spinning.

The rig is quite simple, as a beginner I found it the best way to start.

...the only problem is that with big waves I usually get crazy!

Welcome aboard Davide

Bass can be tricky when your not used to them...what with the gill covers and dorsal spines. A damp cloth is handy for putting over them if your not too confident in dealing with them, makes it easy to take the hook out without being spiked. The fishery board also have a catch and release guide, it deals with salmon but is applicable to bass too, Bradan would probably have a link for it.

Thank you very much, I'll try to follow your indications even if it sounds a "bit" difficult doing most of those things on rocks...let's just hope to get enough fishes to make good experience...!!
